Page 62 of Freeing Emily

I lean my head against the wall and stare blankly at the water droplets collecting around my feet before they travel down the drain.

I’m not sure how much time has passed when Ingrid’s gasp startles me.

“What are you doing?” she sputters with wide eyes.

My head feels incomprehensibly heavy when I try to turn toward her.

She shouts but in my muddled state, I can’t make out what it is.

The scent of musk and spice fills my nose.

Liam.

The icy water is shut off and a towel is draped over my shoulders.

“Come on, Féileacán,” he whispers as he bends to lift me into his arms.

My head lulls against his shoulder. I can hear the steady beat of his heart and something inside warms.

That’s just the medication.

“I’ll help her get dressed. You go.” Ingrid tells Liam as he sets me on the bed.

I raise my eyes to meet his which are filled with such concern and sadness. My eyelids feel heavy, and they close before I can fight it.

I feel the heat of Liam’s body shift closer and then the warmth of his lips on my forehead. My body unconsciously leans into his touch. Somewhere deep inside my heart cracks.

He releases a deep breath before stepping away. My dazed and blurred vision tracked his silhouette making its way to the door and exiting.

“Oh,Leanbh…What are you doing?” Ingrid whispers as she helps me dress in a clean tee and shorts.

The weight of my tongue makes it impossible to respond so I don’t.

She helps me lay down and then tucks me into my blankets – not too tightly of course – and then switches the overhead lights off. The soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminates the room and I drift off.

I sleep well into the next day when Rhys steps into my room.

“Paige wants you to meet her in the cellar.”

My brows raise and my stomach rolls.

“Why?” I ask.

He smirks but the amusement doesn’t reach his eyes.

“She has an idea.”

I nod and follow him out.

Electricity spreads throughout my body as I stand outside Emily’s door. The nerves I feel are overwhelming my system and I feel like I’m going to throw up.

I don’t know what state she’s going to be in when I cross that threshold and I don’t think I’m strong enough to see her dazed and nearly unconscious from whatever medication she’s taken.

I wasn’t there when she killed one of Vladimir’s men, but Rhys has mentioned it was a shock to see her release so much anger. Emily has always been gentle and relatively level-headed. To know she had that emotion trapped inside makes it even clearer that I need to help her.

I need to find a way to help her release what’s inside before it locks her in a place she’s never going to escape.

I straighten my shoulders and sigh before raising my fist and knocking on the door.
