He ran his hands through his hair. This didn’t look positive.

“Yeah. I’m fine. Just, uh. If you’re into going out, I’ve heard of this new place opening up in old town, and maybe, with you being new and all, you want to check it out. With me?”

It hadn’t been intentional, but I was chewing on my lip, trying to figure out what to say. If I were being honest, no one ever felt right to date, and after last night?

But then that little dark side of me decided to pop up. Cas hadn’t declared anything to me. He hadn’t done anything but be possessive and shitty. And then he killed someone who talked to me. An involuntary smile spread over my lips as I realized something.

He couldn’t kill a detective, could he?

“Yeah, sure. I’d love to. When?”

He returned the smile, and it took me off guard. He was just a normal guy. He had no idea what my past was. He didn’t know what I’d been through, and he had no idea what was happening in my life.

Maybe he was a fool or maybe it was me, but if I couldn’t figure out Cas, maybe I’d piss him off instead, and maybe in the process, I find something I didn’t know I needed. Maybe I just needed normal.

EIGHTEEN

Every thud sentpain shooting through my raw knuckles.

“Dude, chill the fuck out. The fight’s in a matter of hours, and at this rate, you’re going to be fucked up before then.”

I shook off X and punched the bag one more time.

“I’m doing some asshole a fucking favor. I might kill whoever’s in the ring with me.”

X threw up his hands.

“What the fuck happened last night? You disappeared like a bat out of hell and didn’t tell us where you were going. You can’t fucking do that shit. Not right now.”

Every breath I took came in quick and I tried to let it out slowly, but nothing helped. What had happened? Fuck. What had happened?

“It’s fine. I headed to Noir. We had a problem.”

X waved over Zeid, and I should have punched one of them, thinking they could psychobabble bullshit me into talking, but fuck. I was a mess.

“Cassy here went to Noir without us. Why do you think that is?”

Sweat dripped down Zeid’s face just as bad as mine. He had his own demons to contend with today.

“I have a fucking guess and she has long blond hair and innocent green eyes.”

I reached back and threw a punch. Zeid seemed to know it was coming and stopped me.

“Yeah, thought so. X, it’s Rylee. Was she at Noir?” Zeid asked.

The rage inside me cracked a little. I couldn’t lie to my brothers. They were all we had in this damn world. No girl could come between us. And no woman should be able to distract me from keeping us all alive.

“Fuck you, Zeid. I don’t have time for her. We don’t have time for her to suck up our time.”

I tried to walk away, but he wasn’t giving me my wrapped fist back.

“Yeah, don’t have time doesn’t mean she isn’t in your head all over again. All those years you’ve been fucking disconnected and moody as shit, until one day you seemed to just be fine. But not really. You don’t think I figured out that you’ve been spying on her for years?”

Fuck.

“Fuck you.”
