He side-glanced me.

“Eric. Just call me Eric.”

I didn’t bother answering because a few steps back and only slightly hidden was a body, and as I studied him, I realized he looked really fucking familiar.

“Son of a bitch.”

Eric turned towards me.

“You okay? It’s pretty clear. Broken neck, nothing too gruesome like the last few.”

My jaw started to ache, and I tried to stop clenching my teeth.

“Yeah. No. It’s just, he looked familiar. Any idea who did it?”

He shook his head.

“No. We’ll have the results of the autopsy as soon as you do your bit and we catalogue whatever we can. We’ve got a name, and he lives right up there in that building. There’s no sign that he was mugged. Still has his wallet with about a hundred bucks in it. I dunno. Maybe he owed the wrong people money or some bullshit. He’s got a clean record, so hard to say.”

My nails bit into my palm, and it was only then that I realized just how pissed I was. Cas had killed the asshole who hit on me last night. Sure, he’d seemed a little like a dick, but to kill him? What the hell?

I’d been drunk, but the words he said were really starting to make sense. He’d been eliminating anyone in my life who had tried to get close to me. Well, men anyway. I’d had some random girl friends here and there, but I sucked at relationships.

My phone rang, and I answered it.

“Why are you ignoring my texts?”

I sighed. I didn’t need to know that it was Cas. It just seemed natural that he would know exactly when to call and drive me crazy.

“I’m not. I had to get to work. Can’t text and drive. Safety first.”

He was quiet for a second.

“Do you have my jacket?”

I shook my head like he could hear me.

“With me? No. I can return it later.”

“Fuck. I don’t want it back. You should have put it on. That body’s in Viper territory.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Guess you should have thought about that then, before you, uh, left the gift.”

“Don’t fuck with me, blossom. If you would have checked my fucking texts, you would have known that. They need to know you belong to the Spectors.”

I didn’t bother answering.

“I don’t belong to any side. I need to go. Let me get to work.”

I hung up and looked over at Eric. He couldn’t haven’t known who I was talking to. A beep of another text came through, and I put the phone in my pocket. I couldn’t deal with him right now. What would happen in broad daylight anyway?

“Alright, well. Uh. I guess I’ll get to work.”

Eric nodded, but something seemed super off about the way he was acting.

“You okay, detective—Eric, I mean?”
