I froze. The second the door clicked shut, there was Emilee.

“Butterfly, what are you doing awake?”

She was naked, sitting on my kitchen table.

“Are you my breakfast?”

Her foot stopped me, resting her toes on my chest as her face said all the fuck yous she could muster.

“You went and tracked down whoever you needed to without me. Didn’t you?”

I gripped her ankle, running my thumb in circles over the soft skin.

“Emilee, I don’t have to tell you about every single person that I have to track down and deal with. If I did, literally we would spend more time talking and less time fucking.”

I thought that was rather clever, but she didn’t even crack a smile.

“Fine. I thought about you, but I needed it to be done quick. Gage had him ready, and I wasn’t sleeping anyway. Time isn’t on our side right now, is it? My brother is getting to my people. He is involved in the Lords, and they are trying to destroy you.” I paused, but she wasn’t giving me a damn thing. No olive branch. Not even a smirk. “At the end of the day, time is the biggest enemy of it all. It doesn’t matter how stupid my brother is. Every day he and everyone else goes unchecked, the more chance they have of turning whoever they can with more money, more favors, more what the fuck ever.”

She wasn’t giving in.

“Let’s go back to bed and I’ll find someone new for you to kill in the morning.”

I watched her every breath, every rise and fall of her beautiful breasts, and every blink of her eyes. There was a single second where I wondered if she was going to flip me off and this would end up being just another little argument.

“We’re going to have ups and downs, Butterfly. Any successful marriage does. Come shower with me and we can start again tomorrow.”

She shook her head.

“No. No, I don’t think I want that.”

“The shower? Or the successful marriage?”

She started to lower her foot, but the second I tried to move closer, it was right back to a stiff leg and an unreadable woman.

“All of it. I never wanted to get married. I think I somehow talked myself into thinking that if I had to, at least it was to someone that I respected. And damn if your cock isn’t magical. But that’s not really a good enough reason to marry someone.”

What the fuck was she getting at? I’d fucking cut my heart open for this woman, and she was done over one single situation?

“Respect isn’t enough? Good sex? The fact I fucking love you, something I didn’t even know I could do?”

Her lip quivered, or maybe that was in my head, because the next second, she dropped her foot and slid off the table, trying to stay out of my grip.

“Roman, I don’t think in our world, we get love. We don’t get happily ever after. I’m going to be a pawn no matter who I marry. You aren’t going to change just for me. You’re still going to do what you do, and I guess the honeymoon period is over.”

I anticipated her and moved just a second after, grabbing her around the waist and pulling her tight into me.

“Let me go. I could make you if I wanted to.”

I held tighter.

“I’m sure you can, Butterfly. But in the meantime, let’s talk about this ‘we don’t get happily ever after.’ Who the fuck said that?”

“Everyone. Everyone has told us time and time again. My father. Parks. All the other rich pricks out there. Who married for love and lasted?”

I thought about it. Thought hard.

“I’m sure someone else has gotten lucky to marry their choice.”
