He was in my bed, a place I’d hoped he’d find his way to eventually. But he wasn’t inviting me intomybed.

“I didn’t want to be by myself. Have you got an air mattress you can sleep on?”

My wolf was confused by the term, and I couldn’t explain to Matt that we weren’t air mattress people. If he was asleep, I could shift. My beast was fine with being on the carpet.

“Don’t worry about me.” I explained I’d get the candles from his room.

“You’re coming back, right?’

“Matt, I’ll always come back.” Under my breath, I added, “To you.”

I grabbed the candles, set both in my bathroom, and left the door open so Matt could see if he got up to pee. Hauling a comforter from the closet and another pillow, I settled on the floor at the foot of the bed.

My mate was silent, and I hoped he was falling asleep, though his breathing suggested otherwise.

“Are you comfortable?”

Perhaps his question would be followed by an invitation to join him in my own bed. “I’m fine.”

The bedding rustled, and I suspected he’d rolled over.

“Why did you bite me, Ranger?”

Why was he asking that now? I’d reveal my wolf when he had gotten to know me. I had to fudge the answer, vowing to tell him the truth after the danger with Dane had passed.

“It’s a tradition within La Luna Noir.”

“What?” He crawled to the end of the bed and peered at me. “Are you saying I’m a member of your little gang, which by the way, the spelling is grammatically incorrect?”

Thank gods Flint wasn’t around to hear Matt referring to our pack that way. I explained luna was for my great-grandmother and noir for her husband, both of them immigrants from different countries.

I wished Matt would stop talking because the more questions he asked, the more lies I told. “But if Dane thinks you are one of us, he might back off.”

I held my breath, hoping Matt would accept that for now.

“Okay.” He was silent for a while but stayed where he was. “But why?—”

I cut him off. “We do this in turns. You ask a question and then it’s my turn.”

My mate yawned. “I’m so tired. Ask away tomorrow.”

Gods, he was infuriating, coupled with being adorable and cute.

But I would need him to tell me what he found while driving Dane around.

Perhaps we could use the information to crush The Obsidian Circle as a whole and not just the Alpha.

THIRTEEN

MATT

Now that I was at the bottom of the bed, with Ranger on the floor below me, my mind went to him naked. Not that he was. He was wearing an oversized T-shirt and shorts, but I’d already caught a glimpse of his enormous cock in the bathroom.

Ranger had excellent hearing, but crawling back to my pillow would be awkward. He’d pick up on me scooting to the other end of the bed. And somewhere deep inside me, I wanted that. For him to fix his gaze on my ass.

Jeez, Josh was right. What was wrong with me? I was desperate for a mobster to get excited about what was under my robe.

My eyes were closed as I pretended to sleep, waiting for Ranger to doze off, but with the heating off, the room was freezing, and I shivered. I could fumble for the covers and put them over me, but the pillow was at the other end of the bed.
