I looked away, shaking my head. I shouldn’t have been surprised by his answer. I shouldn’t have been surprised by anything he did, but I was fucking blindsided by this.

“Are you going to leave me now, too?” He bit the words out. “Just like everyone else?”

I thought the unequivocal answer was no, but now …

“I don’t know,” I mumbled, turning and walking back into the bedroom. Orin slammed the door shut, and I stood there a moment wondering what I could do. Would I even be allowed to leave after witnessing what I had? Did I really want to? Jesus, I didn’t know what to do.

My thoughts were interrupted when there was a knock on the door. Moving on autopilot, I opened it and saw Keir on the other side. He smiled at me—a nice smile—not one hinged with malice like Orin was so good at. Why couldn’t I have been attracted to someone like him instead?

A frown formed between his brows when he caught sight of my face. “Jesus, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” I brushed off his concern and took a step back.

His eyes darted over my shoulder, and the relief that crossed his expression when he saw the bathroom door shut was visible.

“Were you looking for Orin?”

“No. I was looking for you. I wanted to see whether you were okay after what happened.”

My cheeks flushed with color. Of course, Orin had told them how he’d found me. With my eyes fixed on a spot on the floor, I nodded. “Fine. Orin …” My words stalled.

Keir heaved a sigh. “Yeah, Orin.” He studied me for a moment. “Has he hurt you?”

My head jerked up, and I shook it. “He would never.”

That earned me a frown. “I’ve never known him to be gentle with anyone.”

I shrugged because there was no other way to answer that. I couldn’t tell him that in Orin’s own way, he was gentle. It was like saying that a lion could be nurturing. It wasn’t something you witnessed very often or were lucky enough to witness at all, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t possible.

“Look, I want you to give him some space tonight. Whatever happened tonight messed with his head, and I think that some time apart might be wise.”

As much as I hated to admit he was right, I felt like maybe he was. Orin had pushed me away when he was in the bathroom. He asked me not to touch him, so sleeping in the same bed would not help the issue.

“I think you’re right.”

Keir’s brows rose. “You think I’m right?” he repeated.

“Yeah. I think he needs some space tonight.”

He nodded, relief crossing his features. “Grab some things, and I’ll take you to a guest room.”

After snatching up some clothes, I followed Keir down the hall, stopping at a room only two doors away from Orin’s bedroom. He opened the door and stepped inside. It was like a carbon copy of Orin’s except it didn’t smell the same as his did.

“You’ll be comfortable here until morning,” he told me, running a hand through his hair. He looked exhausted.

“Are you okay? Did anyone get hurt tonight?”

“We lost one of our Sentinels, but other than that, we were fine. Orin took out most of them from the roof before any reinforcements could get in.” He smiled at me. “It’s late. Get some rest. Good night, Fallon.”

“Good night.”

Keir stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him. I turned around and stared at the room, feeling lost inside. It was crazy to feel this way though. Orin was literally down the hall, and I had spent a lot of time on my own. Why should this be any different from those times?

I turned on the bathroom light before shutting the door until just a sliver of light pierced through the room. I hadn’t had to sleep with the light on in a very long time, but my nerves were shot, and the way Orin had spoken to me had left me rattled. Climbing into bed, I curled up on my side and shut my eyes.

Sleep was elusive though. I lay there listening to the noises of the house, to the men who passed by on the runner outside. I listened to my own breathing and erratic pulse and wondered what I was going to do now.

I was close to drifting off when I heard Orin roar, “Where the hell is she?”
