“Are you sure you’re all right?” she asked, her brown eyes darting to the stairs before coming to rest on my face again.

“I’m fine.”

“Do you know who that is?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes widened. “And you’re aware of what he does?”

“More than aware.”

She shifted on her feet nervously. “Are you being held against your will?”

“Look …” I started to scan her shirt, looking for a name tag but finding none. “What is your name?”

“Lottie.”

“Lottie, I know who he is. I know what he does. I’m here willingly.” If only she knew just how willingly. “You have nothing to worry about.”

Lottie glanced over her shoulder. “There’s someone here who would like to talk to you.”

My shoulders stiffened. “Who is it?”

“Me,” a deep voice said.

My eyes fell onto the shadow that consumed the table in front of me, and I looked up at the man who had approached. He didn’t look familiar, but there was something about his energy that was off.

“W-who are you?” I asked, cursing that I’d stammered my way through the question.

“The name’s Lorcan Kane,” he said. When I showed no sign of recognition of the name, he turned to Lottie. “Get everyone out. Lock the door behind you.”

Shit.

He turned green eyes to me—green eyes that at any other time would be gorgeous to look at, but right now, on this man, they filled me with dread. “Now, I need you to listen and listen well. You’re going to leave. The Mac Tíre Reaper and I have some business. If you alert him to my presence, I will kill you. If you try to tip him off, I will kill you. If you refuse—”

“I get it,” I interrupted. “You’ll kill me.”

He nodded.

“Who the hell are you?”

One dark brow winged up. “You’ve not heard of me?”

“Should I?”

He shook his head. “I belong to the Fiach Clan. I’m their Reaper.”

I almost jumped out of my seat, but Lorcan’s hand on my shoulder stopped me.

“You don’t need to be afraid of me. You’re an innocent in all this and I will let you goifyou leave quietly.”

“W-why are you doing this?”

“You probably don’t know of Orin’s sins, but I do. Both my clan and the Bèar Clan are aware of what he’s been doing, and he can’t get away with it.”

Fuck, fuck, fuck.I dropped my gaze to the table before bringing it back to his face. “Are you going to kill him?”

“Yes,” Lorcan replied simply. “So, go. Now. And don’t ever come back to this town.”
