“When I noticed you were seizing, I dragged you onto the floor to make sure you didn’t hurt yourself. Pulling the blanket from the bed, I managed to get most of your body onto it, then pulled it through the house like a sled. Once I got to the front door, I roused you. You were on your feet just long enough to get close to the car.”

Jesus, the lengths she went to. Even though I wasn’t happy to be in a hospital, I knew she’d done the right thing. In fact, if she weren’t there, I knew I would’ve been dead.

“Thank you.”

She spun around to face me at my gruff words. “Did you just …thankme?”

I let out a small huff.

Fallon leaned back against the window and stared at me. “You’re welcome.”

A flame ofsomethingbegan to flicker in my chest, but I snuffed it out quickly. “What story did you tell them when you brought me in?”

One of her brows quirked up. “Why would you assume I told a story?”

“Because your brother has been a part of the clan for almost a decade. You know how things go.”

Folding her arms across her chest, she replied, “I said you were another lodger at the B&B I was staying at. Said I found you collapsed in the kitchen, and you’d told me your name was Jim.”

The relief I felt at that information nearly floored me. “Good. The less they know about who I am, the better.” I scanned her face, noticing the dark circles under her eyes. “How have you been?”

“Okay.” Something outside caught her eye, and she turned to look at it more closely. “Shit.”

“What is it?”

“That black Rover is back.”

“Black Rover?”

“It followed me back from the store during the storm. And then when I came here to drop you at emergency, it was there again.”

It wasn’t the Mac Tíre—they didn’t know where we were—which meant the Bèar Clan had caught up with us. Dammit, it took less time than I thought it would. We were nothing but sitting ducks.

“The windows?”

“Blacked out.”

I yanked at the tape on the crook of my arm. “Help me get this thing out.”

She didn’t ask any questions this time—just jumped into action. Her fingers were warm where they traced the inside of my bicep down to my elbow. Once the tape was gone, she slid the canula free. Glancing around, she found a metal cart with medical supplies on it and rummaged around until she found a Band-Aid, then helped me from bed.

“Where are my clothes?”

She dropped to her knees, and my heart began to race. This woman on her knees was a big fucking kink for me. When she got back onto her feet, she was holding a clear plastic bag containing my jeans.

I ripped open the bag while she drew the curtains. “That’s all they took off me?”

“You were still shirtless, so yeah. I’ll turn around so you can get changed.” She spun toward the window once more. I stepped into my jeans and buttoned the fly. Fallon turned around almost immediately, her mouth pressing into a line.

“What?”

“I wish I’d brought a shirt back with me, that’s all.”

I held out my hand to her. “Come on. We have to go.”

She blinked down at my offered palm, and I realized what I’d done. Yes, when people touched me, it made my skin crawl, but when I instigated it, I was okay … although I couldn’t remember the last time I’d instigated it.

“Fallon,” I said in a dark and stormy voice.
