“Yeah, he doesn’t like smart mouths, so I suggest you keep yours in check while you’re with him.”

Her nostrils flared in anger, but instead of running her mouth again, she popped another crisp onto her tongue and chewed. Sloane stared out the window, and I realized she was giving me the silent treatment. Fuck, it felt like I was looking at my sister, Fallon, when she got pissy with me. Sloane may have only been eighteen, but her maturity level was far beyond those years—except for now, clearly.

Pulling out my phone, I dialed my sister’s number.

She answered on the first ring. “Big brother! I was just thinking about you.”

I narrowed my eyes and wiped some lint from the leg of my slacks. “Why doesn’t that fill me with confidence?”

“I was just telling my girlfriend about you. She’s single.” She said that last part in a sing-song voice.

“No, Fallon.”

“You can’t say no yet. You don’t even know a thing about her.”

I scrubbed a hand over my face. “If she’s your friend, that’s all I need to know.”

“Alana is lovely. Tall. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. All your favorites!”

“No.”

“I’ve shown her your photo. She thinks you’re cute.”

“I don’t know how many other ways I can say this, Fallon, but the answer is still no.”

“You’re no fun.”

I could practically see the pout on her face. “What are you doing right now?”

“Alana and I are about to meet up with some friends from the course at the pub for dinner. Then we’re hitting one of the clubs in town.”

I was instantly on alert. “Is that such a good idea?”

“I’ll be fine, Grayson. I’ve been doing well. No slips. No mishaps.”

I ground my molars. “I think it’s too soon.”

She heaved a resigned sigh, then lowered her voice. “I need this, Gray. I haven’t seen my friends in six months. I dropped off the fucking planet, but I’m good. I’ve been seeing the shrink. I’ve been going to meetings.”

“What about Ava? What does she think?”

Yeah, throwing her therapist into the conversation was a dick move, but I had to be sure.

The acoustics of the call changed like she’d taken herself to a more private space to talk. “She thinks it’s time.”

“She thinks it’s time to go to a pub, then a club? Now? At this juncture?”

Fallon was silent for a moment. I hoped to hell she was actually thinking this through. “I miss going out, Gray.”

My eyes shuttered shut. Her tone of voice slayed me. When I opened them, I let out a deep breath and said, “Do you need me to come with you tonight? You know, to keep you accountable?”

“You would do that for me?”

“My boss will give me the time. Just say the word.”

“Then that would be nice. Thank you.”

“Okay. Text me the name of the club. I’ll meet you there.”
