Gigi nodded. “Yeah,and Ialsosuggestedwegoon anotheroneafterthatsinceMaxhadcalled metocomehomeearly…. What?What’sthatlookfor?”sheasked,eying Jen suspiciously.

“Nothing,I’mjustimpressed.Two guysatonce…I didn’tthinkyou haditinyou.”

Gigi rolled her eyes.“Anyway,when I gothome—”

“Hetoldyou itwasall amistakeandfuckedyou stupid?”Jensaid,hopeful.

“Notexactly.Westarted up again,buthehad togotowork.Hewokeme up when hegothome and wemadelove.”

“Itwasn’tjustfucking?”

Gigi shookherhead.“Wesleptin thesamebed. Iassumed itwasonlysex,buthewantedmeto staywith him.”

“Isheanygood?”

Gigi could tell itwasa question shehad wantedtoaskfor along time. “I’m not going toanswerthat,”shereplied acidly.

Her roommate puther handsup in theuniversal sign for surrender. “Okay,okay.Sowhat happened?Whydid you quitif thingsweregoing sogreat?”

Gigi’schestexpandedwitha deep breath. “Hiswifeshowed up.”

Itlookedasif Jen’sjaw hadsuddenlyunhinged. “Wife?Maxismarried?Didyouknow?”

“Yes,yes,and no. He’dtoldme hiswifehad died. Heneverspokeabouther beyond that,and I justthoughthewasstillgrieving,or hejustdidn’twanttosharethatstuff withme.”

“What did Maxsaytoyou?Did heexplain?”

“I didn’tlethim.I was tooupset. I justpackedmysuitcaseand left.”

A buzzing camefromtheintercomoutin theliving room. Gigi looked atJen.“If that’shim,I don’t wanttoseehim.”

Jen frowned for amomentthen scootedoff thebed.“If that’swhatyouwant,Borello,”shesaid softly,disappearingoutthe door.Gigi draped herforearmover herfacetoblockouttheglaringly cheerful sunshinestreaming through thewindowaboveher bed. Although wallowing all daywas whatshewanted todo,shecouldn’t. Shehad togettoclass.

Standing up,shelooked at herself in themirror,wiping awaythetearsand finger-combing her hair. Atleastshedidn’tlooklikeshe’d been crying. Shequickly gotchanged andcollectedthebooks sheneededforclass. Stepping from her room,shefound Jen standing attheintercom.

“I told you alreadythatshe doesn’twanttoseeyou.” ShelookedatGigi asshespoke.

“And I said Iwon’tbelong.I justneedtoexplainthesituationtoher.”Maxsounded angry,but under thatangerwasdesperation.“Please.”

Jen raised hereyebrowsinquestion. Clutching atthestrap acrossherbody,Gigi shook her head. Shewasn’treadytoseeMaxyet;thewoundswerestill raw.

“Sorry,asshole,”Jen muttered,releasing thebutton. Sheshrugged. “I doubthe’llleave.”

Gigi suspectedasmuch too. “I guessI’ll havetotaketherearexitthen.”

“Goodthinking. I’ll try getrid of himin the meantime.”

“Thanks,Jen. I’ll seeyouthis afternoon?”

“I’ll behere. Imighteven haveabottleofvodkawithyour nameon ittohelp drownyour sorrows,”sheaddedwith amischievousgrin.

“Soundslikea plan,”Gigi said, makingsureherkeyswerein her pocketand reaching for the door.“I’ll see you.”
