She stands. “I need a shower.”

I motion to the picnic basket. “What about our picnic?”

“I’m not hungry.”

She walks toward the house and panic seizes me. “Don’t go, Sophia! I promise I’ll tell Weston about us.”

She stops and turns around to face me. “When will you tell Weston about us?”

I don’t have an answer for her.

“When you’re finished with me?”

I growl. I will never be finished with her. “I’m asking for a bit of patience. This isn’t easy for me.”

“And it is easy for me? Lying to my brother and my dad about you? Swearing my girlfriends to secrecy? Being your dirty little secret?”

I growl. “You are not my dirty little secret.”

“And yet you’re afraid to have a picnic on the beach with me because my brother might find out. Because I’m not worth fighting for.”

When she walks away this time, I let her. Maybe she’s right. Maybe we shouldn’t have gotten involved. Maybe we should end this now before anyone gets hurt.

Except I don’t want to. Since I’ve had Sophia, I don’t want to give her up.

But I don’t want to give Weston up either. He’s the only family I have.

Chapter 25

It’s not an apology if the fire department isn’t called.

Sophia

“Deglaze the pan with red wine,” I read the recipe. “What the hell does deglaze mean?”

I scroll through the recipe but there’s no glossary explaining what deglaze means. All it says is ‘deglaze the pan’. What the hell is deglazing?

“Call Paisley,” I order my phone.

The phone rings and rings. I’m afraid she’s in the middle of one of her experiments and isn’t going to answer when she finally does.

“Yes?”

“What’s deglazing?”

“Are you cooking?”

“I’m serious, Paisley. What does deglazing mean?”

“Deglazing is a cooking technique for removing and dissolving browned food residue from a pan to flavor sauces, soups, and gravies.”

I groan. “I understood the words but not the meaning. How do I deglaze a pan with red wine?”

“What are you making?”

“Paisley,” I growl.

“I’m not being particular, but I can’t answer the question unless I know what food you’re preparing.”
