“Your hair looks so good!” Wren said as she turned into the long laneway.

I smiled as I looked into the sun visor’s mirror. Pleased as the setting sun caught the highlights of every strand. “I agree, she really did an awesome job.”

I let the hairdresser have free rein over my head. She immediately went to work, creating long layers instead of the one length I had sported for the last ten years.

Now, it was a blend of light and dark tones. Lighter streaks framed my face and ran throughout the lengths, adding dimension and depth. I had been happy just the way it was, but Wren thought it could be a bit better. At her insistence, the hairdresser dyed extensions to match. Despitehaving to sit in a salon all day, Wren had been right. The added hair made it perfect.

It now flowed freely just below the swell of my breasts, a good six inches longer than it was. But with the added layers it felt light and oh so soft. It was an easy style that I could easily mimic at home. All the tech did was parted it slightly off center, then tucked the bangs behind my left ear. I seriously felt like a new woman.

I closed the mirror and turned the sun visor up just as the gate at the guard shack opened.

“Hey Radley,” Wren called out as we passed through, and he waved us on.

“Rory is going to shit himself when he sees you!” She cackled.

“I hope so,” I murmured as the estate came into view. I looked at her and frowned. “Why are there no lights on in the house?”

“Good question,” she said as we pulled into the garage.

She turned the car off and we gathered up our belongings then made our way through the garage into the mud room.

“Why the fuck is it so dark in here?” Wren said, feeling for the light switch.

Fear gripped my chest at the stillness of the house. “You don’t suppose something hashappened, do you?”

“Oh god, I hope not!” She opened the door that led into the kitchen, and it too was pitch black.

We stumbled into the room feeling the walls as we went. A low growl came from the far side of the kitchen, and that’s when the room was suddenly filled with light.

“SURPRISE!!”

My eyes took in the scene before me. A banner that said ‘Happy Birthday Kat’ was strung across the room. And the kitchen ceiling was obscured with helium filled balloons. The best part, the whole household was standing there with grins on their faces. Even Killer was present, safely contained in a large dog crate.

Rory came up to me beaming as he took me in his arms. His lips mere inches from my ear, he murmured seductively, “Earlier I said you looked hot. Now, you’re sexy as fuck. Happy Birthday darlin’.”

Tears sprung to my eyes as I leaned back. “How did you know it was my birthday?”

“We found a copy of your birth certificate while looking for the papers for Declan, remember?”

“How stupid could I be? I had completely forgotten about that!” I smiled.

“Come with me,” he said, taking hold of my hand. “I have a surprise for you.”

As he led me through the kitchen, we stopped a few times. Connor, Declan and even Tomas, each wanted a hug and to wish me a happy birthday. As we made our way past the table in the breakfast nook, I saw that it was laden with gifts. My mother always made sure to have a birthday party for me growing up, but never anything like this once I was over sixteen.

“Okay. Close your eyes,” Rory said.

I did and felt him guiding me forward into the living room. Five steps in, he told me to stop and open my eyes.

Derek stood there with a grin on his face. “Happy Birthday Kat!”

I squealed in delight when I saw him and rushed over to give him a hug. “How did you get here? Who is watching the bar?”

“Rory thought you might want to see me. So, he called the Dry Bone and flew me here. I closed the bar, just until tomorrow night. I fly out in the morning.”

I took Rory’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “Thank you for this.”

“Don’t mention it,” he said, rubbing my back. “Are you guys hungry? Chinese food is on its way.”
