“Declan had me cleaning out the stalls,” he said, his eyes never straying from my face.

“Where is he?” she asked.

He shook his head. “No clue.” He narrowed his eyes at me. “You were a champion kickboxer? Of what, the peewee division?” he snorted.

I raised my chin and folded my arms across my chest. “There is no such thing as a peewee division. You are referring to Atomweight. I was Middleweight.”

“What does that mean? Does it go by weight and height?” Wren asked.

“Weight. I was 165 pounds of pure muscle.” I looked away, towards the stables where the horses lazily grazed and hoped they would stop with their questions. Whenever anyone talked about it, I relived the day my career ended. A memory I tried to leave buried.

Wren laughed, jabbing her elbow into his leg. “She could kick your ass, Rory.”

He took a step away from her and stared me down. “I highly doubt that. I have a good hundred pounds on her at least.”

I stood up. “Yes, well that’s in the past, and if you don’t mind, I’d like to keep it there. Excuse me.”

Without another word, I took off walking across the patio, heading straight for the pasture and prayed my leg didn’t betray me.

Chapter 5

Rory

Wren is looking up at me, a thoughtful look on her face. Shielding her eyes, she squints. “You don’t like her, do you?”

“Nope.”

She motions for me to take the seat that Kat had just vacated. “Why not? You don’t even know her.”

I pull out the chair and sit. “I don’t need to know someone to not like them.” I glanced over to where she is standing by the fence and my body betrays my words. Fuck that. I don’t need a woman complicating my life, especially that one.

Wren takes a sip of her coffee and says, “You know what they say.”

“Who?” I shrug. “Who says what?”

She laughs. “Everybody. Don’t judge a book byits cover!”

I fight the urge to look towards the pasture. Kat isn’t a book, but she does have a nice cover, a very nice one.

“Everyone judges a book by its cover. People are no different.” From the corner of my eye, I see her walking towards us with Declan, and she trips. In a flash I’m standing and heading towards the steps, then freeze when I hear Wren cackle behind me.

“You got it bad Rory!” she snorts out a giggle, and I turn a stony gaze on her.

“Like fuck I do,” I bite out, spinning on my heel. I head towards the house to the tune of Wren cackling her head off at my retreating back and fighting the urge to fly down the patio steps to pick Kat up and carry her wherever the fuck she needs, just so she never trips again.

Kat

I stand by the fence as tears trail down my cheeks, thankful neither of them followed me. But a cough has me swiping my cheeks, and I turn at the sound to see Declan standing there. He leans his forearms on the fence and asks, “Bad day?”

I let out a half sob half laugh and sniffed. “Bad life.”

He nodded, as he looked out to where the horses grazed. “Well, I would tell you to go clean the stalls, but Rory already did that.”

This time I chuckled. “Maybe tomorrow.”

He looked at me and said, “I know you had a long drive here, but do you feel up to going to the hospital with me this afternoon?”

“Sure. What time?”
