I hurried through the kitchen and out the back door. The music was louder out here. Post Malone pumped hard while everyone was hanging around the pool. As I rounded the corner out of the open garage, I heard Ashley squeal and then a splash. Sliding along the shadows, I walked quickly down the driveway.

“Anna,” called a male voice behind me.

Midway down the drive, I stopped and turned, my pulse fluttering in my throat.

“Where you goin’? Ashley’s over by the pool.” Blake hooked a thumb over his shoulder as he drew closer.

“Yeah. Uh…”

I honestly didn’t know what to say without sounding lame. I shifted from one foot to another.

Blake was tall with a muscular build, although he didn’t play sports at school. Most girls found him hot. Objectively, I agreed. But there was something about his gaze that made me feel like a mouse watched by a hawk. Like at the game tonight. Like right now.

His fingers slid around my wrist. “Why don’t you come on back and sit with me? We haven’t had a chance to talk.”

The devious tilt of his mouth sent a warning chill down my spine. He didn’t want to just talk, and I knew it.

“No, thanks.” I stepped back, but his hold on my wrist tightened. “I’m going to head out. I’ve got to be up early tomorrow.”

He laughed, the dark sound speeding my pulse with a touch of fear. His black eyes glinted by the light of the streetlamp. “Where you gotta be, little Anna?” He tugged me closer, then his other hand gripped my hip.

“Please, don’t.” I planted my hands on his chest and pushed, but he didn’t budge. “I need to go.”

“No, you don’t.” His eyes were glazed from whatever he’d been drinking or smoking.

“Let me go, Blake.”

“Nah, I don’t think I’m gonna do that.”

I smelled whiskey on his breath as he bent closer and sucked my neck. “Stop it!”

I grappled with his hands, trying to maneuver out of his hold, but he was fast and strong, even while drunk. He laughed harder. Terrifying me was amusing him.

Then his hand was on my ass, and he yanked me against his chest, whispering in my ear, “You’re fine as fuck, Anna. Give me a kiss, and I’ll let you go.”

“No.”

I knew he wanted more than a kiss, and I wasn’t giving him anything.

“You’re a little cock-tease, aren’t you?”

I cried out when he bit my neck this time, his hands all over me. “Please—”

Suddenly, I was pushed sideways and fell onto the grass beside the drive. Blake was on the cement, a larger figure straddling him, punching him in the face.

Reed.

They grappled on the ground, the sound of a fist hitting flesh and Blake grunting before he bellowed a sound of frustration. While Reed continued to pound him, Blake fought back. He finally managed to twist out from under Reed and stumble to his feet. He swung and missed when Reed ducked.

Then Reed landed a hard punch to the gut. Blake bent forward and shuffled back a few steps, coughing then chuckling to himself.

They were both panting when Blake stood upright, swiping blood from his nose.

“Damn, Robicheaux,” he sneered. “You like that tight baby pussy, too, huh?”

Reed moved so fast he was a dark blur, pounding a hard fist into Blake’s face that sent him sprawling to the pavement.

“Fuck,” gurgled Blake as he rolled to his stomach and spat out blood.
