"And the way you said no to him. Just shut him down like that. I loved it."

I pulled her in closer so my lips were on her cheek, her legs almost on my lap, her knee tight in my other hand. "I will always shield you, baby. A spotlight comes at you, I'll shield you. Shattered glass, I shield you. A bullet, I shield you."

"No one has ever shielded me from anything," she whispered.

"That's over now. I got your back, your front. Nothing will touch you."

"My dad tried to shield my mom before..."

"I know, babe."

We watched the rest of the show in a daze. She was still hot for me, clinging on me, tilting her head back trying to get me to kiss her. She was irresistible with her sweet sighs, and I wanted to lay one on her badly. I wasn't normally into kissing, but this girl was begging to be smooched.

"Fuck it." I arched my neck and planted one on her. Slow at first until the shock wore off and she opened for me. Hot and wet inside. She clawed at my jacket and sucked me in with her mouth as I licked her up. She had been safely hiding in the do-not-fuck category since I'd met her, but she was climbing over that wall and threatening to jump over. It was getting too heated for our surroundings, so I pulled away and let go ofher knee.

She wiped at her lips, which were smeared with red, and crossed her legs again the other way. And now I was hard and didn't give a shit about Kenny or his show.

"You look stunning tonight. Goddamn gorgeous."

She fidgeted with her dress, but I caught her smiling. "Thank you."

"You don't need all that makeup and stuff, but damn, you wear it like you were born to do it."

She took my hand and pretended to pay attention to Kenny's act.

The disastrous magic show finally ended with an elaborate illusion where he escaped from being chained in the box when really all he'd done was crawl out under the stage, remove the chains, and reappear.

He came out for his curtain call, and the crowd rose to their feet. Wren and I stood too since we were supposed to be getting on his good side tonight.

"Thank you all for coming. Please enjoy the food, drinks, and dancing in the grand ballroom. Have a magical evening." He tossed a puff of glitter in an arch indicating we should head in that direction.

We followed the crowd into the ballroom but avoided the food table. I would never eat anything prepared by this conman.

A band in the corner began playing smooth jazz. Giant red hearts hung from the ceiling against a backdrop of celestial moons and stars. Two exits and a grand staircase led off the room. Dark lighting made it hard to see the guards and the security setup, but I'd get a closer look at it later.

We held hands and waited for the illusionist wannabe to reappear. I wanted to get some alone time with Kenny, and hopefully he wanted that with me too. He'd invited me to this extravaganza, and I was sure it wasn't just to show off his subpar magic skills. We needed to get this done quickly, so I could get Wren out of here and proceed with my Valentine's Day plans with my wife.

My fake wife, but still, my wife. Wearing my ring, so mine.

Chapter 22 Changing the Playing Field

Wren

The minutes dragged by as we waited for Kenny to enter the ballroom. Watching him up on stage was one thing, but meeting him face-to-face rattled my already jittery nerves.

Finally, Kenny appeared, and my heart raced as the crowd broke into enthusiastic applause. His suit shined in the overhead lights, and his smile beamed at the adulation. Instead of a red cape, he'd tucked a red silk handkerchief into his lapel pocket.

He worked his way over to us and came straight in for a hug. I had to let go of Magnum's hand to give him an awkward pat in response, and luckily, he stepped away. "You look lovely, darling. Congratulations on your nuptials." He took my left hand and inspected the ring. "Fabulous. Did you enjoy the show?"

"Yes, so captivating. You're an excellent magician."

Pride lit up his whole face. "That's very kind." He was deceptively handsome for a criminal. His long hair draped over his ears in a fashionable way, and he oozed charisma.

He let go of my hand and turned his attention to Magnum. "Gavin, nice to meet you in person finally."

Magnum stood still as Kenny did a weird man greeting that involved a subtle skim of his jacket from the shoulders to the pockets, probably checking him for weapons. Ha! We didn't have any.

Magnum returned his arm around my shoulders in a protective manner.
