Unfolding my arms, I wrap them around her, making room for her to snuggle into my chest. I take in a deep breath, allowing her scent to consume me.

“I missed you, too, Little Lux,” I murmur into the soft silk of her hair.

Pulling her head back she gazes up at me, studying my face with a crinkle in her brow. “What’s wrong?” she asks.

I hate what I’m about to say next, but Lux’s mother is right. This world is no place for her, and as much as I want to be selfish and keep her to myself, I have to at least give her the option to get away from this life. No matter how much it breaks me or tears at my heart, shredding it into a million little pieces with no chance at repair.

Cupping her cheek in my hand, she leans into it while her eyes remain focused on mine. “My life is constantly full of danger, Lux. That’s not something that will ever change.” The crinkle in her brow sharpens as her confusion grows.

“I forced you into a marriage with me.” She opens her mouth to speak, but I stop her with a quick move of my finger, placing it lightly on her lips. “I forced you to say yes to a world you should have no part of. And now. . .” I gaze back and forth between her eyes and can see the vulnerability behind them as I speak. It’s as if I’m seeing a direct reflection of the heartache I’m feeling within myself. “Now I’m giving you the chance tosay no. To walk away from the dangers of this place. To walk away from me.”

Lux brings her hand up to my chest, pressing on it lightly. “You want a divorce?” The surprise in her voice lingers in the air between us for a few moments.

I keep quiet, not able to let the words fall from my lips because this isn’t what I want. I want to keep Lux to myself for the rest of our lives, but I can’t be selfish.

“I want you to say it,” she says, her voice growing louder. More urgent. “I want you to tell me that you want a divorce.”

I drop my head and shake it as my voice remains low. “I can’t.”

“Then what is this all about?” she demands. Her hand pressed against my chest gets firmer. I lift my gaze back up to hers and cover her hand with mine.

“I’m trying to keep you away from a dangerous life. To give you a reason to get out.”

“So you’re saying you’re not able to protect me? To keep me safe?”

“Of course I can protect you,” I growl out. “I’d put my life on the line to keep you safe. I’d do fucking anything for you, Lux.”

“Then I’m not going to say no. I’m not going to say no to being part of this world that you live in.” She wraps her other hand around the back of my neck. “Because a world without you is a world I want no part of. I’m in this with you, Teo. I’mchoosingto stay married to you for the rest of my life.”

Her words set off an explosion of warmth in my chest, and I get lost in her eyes, not wanting to fight her on this because I need this woman like the air I breathe. Shewantsto stay with me. I’ve given her the choice, and she chose me. Like I would choose her every damn day.

I let out a long sigh of relief, knowing I’ve done the rightthing. Knowing she refuses to leave me is the greatest fucking joy I could receive. “I swear I’ll live every single day making you the happiest woman in the world.”

A smile breaks out on her face. “You already do, Teo. You already do.” She pulls my face down to hers, and I close the distance between us with a deep kiss full of meaning and emotion. I’ve fallen for this woman with everything that I have.

Sliding my hands up from under the sleek fabric of her pajama shorts, I grip the curve of her ass, lifting her into my arms. With a giggle, Lux instinctively wraps her legs around me, locking them in place behind my back as I continue to kiss her.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing,Mr. DiMaggio?” Lux asks before pressing her lips back to mine.

“Mr. DiMaggio, huh?” I mumble against the heat of her mouth. “I could get used to you calling me that.”

Tangling my fingers in her soft hair, I bring her closer and crash my lips back on hers as I walk us to our bedroom.

“Mmm, Teo. I want to feel you inside me,” she murmurs as I set her down on the edge of the bed before stepping back to look at her—her flushed cheeks and swollen lips that beg to have mine back on them.

“In due time, baby, but right now I need to taste you. Not having you in my bed last night starved me of that pleasure,” I say as I strip my jacket and dress shirt off. “Undress. Now.” It comes off as a command and she responds immediately. I fucking love it.

She shimmies out of her pajama bottoms, letting her black lace underwear fall to the floor with the black shorts while I kick off my shoes. She watches me through hooded eyes as I push down my pants, letting my boxer briefs go with them, releasing my strained length from its confined space.

Lux’s eyes light up when they fall to my dick. An involuntary twitch pulls from me as she licks her lips, but that’s not what right now is for. Right now the only thing that matters is me tasting her.

She lifts her arms to pull her top over her head, but the movement has her stopping and sucking in a sharp breath.

Her back.

Closing the small distance between us, I place my hand on hers, pushing it back down to her lap. “Let me,” I say as I unbutton her silk top. My fingers graze the valley between her breasts as I work my way down the buttons, and the heat from her skin sends a spark through my entire body.

Shedding the fabric off her shoulders, I step back and relish in her naked body. The piece of artwork it is. How it’s something I know I’ll always look at in absolute awe and never take for granted.
