“Yes, he is. And as for killing him, you’ll have to get in line. I hate him.”

“Did he show any signs of madness before this? I’m not kidding, Zoe. The man is not normal. What he did, trying to kill us all, destroyed his career.”

“It would have happened anyway.”

“How so?”

“Christos had already taken action in that regard after he saw my bruised face.”

“I’ll tell you something. I was already rooting for you two before, but now I can say, without any doubts, that I’m a big fan of your Greek.”

“He’s not mine . . . yet.”

“Oops. That’s how you talk, girl. I’m enjoying seeing this change.”

“Almost dying opened my eyes, Bia. The thread of life is very fragile. That day, when I went out to buy ice cream, I thought my world was relatively under control. I had signed a million-dollar contract, was separating from Mike, and found Christos again. And then, less than half an hour later, my universe was gone. My parents’ home was gone, and my best friend was in a coma.”

“I understand what you’re saying. At least something good came out of a fucked-up situation. Now tell me all about your plans.”

“His parents want to meet me.”

“Wow, it’s serious, then.”

“I don’t know. I’m going to visit them next week. We’ll get tested first to confirm we’re not contaminated. I would love to see my mother, but her doctor won’t allow it because even the test can be a false negative.”

“This whole situation is shit.”

“You woke up from a coma with an A to Z list of swear words, didn’t you?

“I’m practicing to get back on track.”

“You didn’t answer me about coming here when you’re finally discharged.”

“I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart, Zoe, but I need to be alone for a while. As soon as the borders are open, I want to go on a Caribbean vacation. But for now, I’m going to stay quiet in my apartment.”

“I won’t pressure you, Bia, but if you change your mind at any time, just let me know.”

“Of course I will. Any news about the runway?”

“Yuri, Christos’s assistant, is planning to do a virtual show. We would present the new collection, but it would be broadcasted on his brands’ channels. Nothing on-site.”

“I love the idea. Let me know if you need me.”

“I love you, Bia. Take care. I hope we can see each other soon.”

“I’m sure that as soon as the vaccine is ready, life will return to its former state.”

Christos

CHAPTER FORTY

I hangup the video call with Yuri. We spent over an hour discussing strategies for my brands during the worldwide crisis.

The only pending issue is canceling the on-site fashion shows. We’ve decided to broadcast them live, but until we’re sure how the global health safety issue will play out, I don’t want crowds gathered or mass contamination.

The lockdown did not affect my profits at all. People continue to buy, but maybe, if this goes on, the fashion sector will feel the impact, of course. Why buy clothes if you don’t have to leave the house? Even I, who haven’t worn jeans on weekdays in years, have turned them into a sort of home uniform, along with long-sleeved black shirts.

Bare feet, however. No socks or shoes.
