“I was slightly busy with work,” she fibbed. She played with the straps on her purse and prayed Cain wouldn’t know she had just told a little white lie.

“Okay, well, you can still sign what I need you to sign. Unfortunately, Mr. Willis was released last night.”

“Released?” she gasped. She sat up straighter. “Why? How?”

“He posted bail. He’ll have his day in court. Have you filed the paperwork I suggested to you?” He leaned back and clasped his hands together.

“No, I’m going there when I leave here,” she admitted. Anxiety rose in her chest. If Glenn was out, then she’d definitely wasn’t returning to her apartment.

He would blame her for being arrested.

“You see that you do. I have a bad feeling about Mr. Willis, and I don’t want to see anything bad happen to you.”

Anya offered a stiff smile. Officer Cain slid the papers in front of her and handed her a pen. She glanced briefly over the report that described the events that had taken place at her home. Her stomach flipped at the mention of the police observing Glenn push buttons on the intercom to get someone to buzz him in.

How dimwitted were the people who lived in the building? Who would grant entrance to someone they didn’t know?

“Initial here and then sign here.” Cain pointed on the paper.

She signed the papers and pushed them back to him. She stood from the chair and hefted her purse strap onto her shoulder.

“Thank you for everything, Officer Cain.” She held out her hand.

He stood and took hers in a firm shake. “Please be careful out there, Miss Graham. Make sure you don’t answer the door if you don’t know who it is—”

“I’ve actually been staying at my parents’ house since that night.” A tremor worked its way through her body. She didn’t know if she would ever want to go back to her apartment. She felt violated having Glenn in her home.

“Well, good. Let me show you the way out of here.”

“Anya?” a deep baritone voice called out behind her.

She turned, and the color drained from her face.

Dallas.

She hadn’t seen him in years. He stalked through the bullpen. He looked the same but was mature and seemed hardened. She was sure his time in the service wasn’t a walk in the park. Instead of the tall skinny kid, he was older and filled out.

All muscles like his brother.

He was about the same height as Dalton. Only instead of a sexy grin, he carried a scowl on his face.

“Dallas.” She cleared her throat. Of all the police stations she had to go to, it was the one where she’d know someone.

He made it over to her and enveloped her into a one-armed hug. “How have you been?” he asked.

Her gaze flickered to Officer Cain’s, then she turned back to Dallas.

His eyes narrowed on her, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to get anything over on him.

“I’m good. Officer Cain was helping out with a little problem, but I’m done here.”

“Here, I’ll walk her out, Cain.”

“Sure thing. Please call if you need anything else, Miss Graham.” Cain nodded to her, sitting back at his desk.

She walked alongside Dallas, praying he didn’t ask precisely why she was at the station.

“So I hear you have gotten married and had a baby,” she exclaimed. This would be safer. If she could get him to talk about his wife and the baby, he would more than likely not inquire about her being there.
