Chapter Ten

Anya guided her mother’s car into the parking lot of the police station and found a spot. She glanced down at her hands and saw a slight tremor. She gripped the steering wheel tight and tried to will her nerves to calm down.

Glenn was arrested.

He can’t hurt you right now.

Anya straightened up and grabbed her purse. She killed the engine and got out of the car. She pressed her hand along the handle to lock the door.

Modern technology was amazing.

She still couldn’t get over the fact her mother’s car switched on with a push of a button. The keys were still in her purse. Her old clunker was old-fashioned and would only start once a key was placed in the ignition and turned.

She walked up to the front door of the police station, and her heart raced.

Now or never.

She entered the building and made her way to the counter.

A woman in a blue police uniform stood at the counter. Her gray hair was ushered up into a ponytail, and she had a no-nonsense look on her face.

“Can I help you?”

The woman’s badge read Officer Loot.

“Hello. Officer Cain asked for me to come down here to fill out some papers—”

“Does he know you were coming?” Officer Loot pulled a pen from her ponytail. She pressed the pen down on a piece of paper on a clipboard before her and paused.

“He asked me to come down here. But I didn’t call him and say I was coming now.” Anya fidgeted under the woman’s glare.

“Let me see if he’s here.” She picked up the phone and placed it on her ear. She turned to her computer, blatantly ignoring Anya. “Hey, some woman is here for Cain. Is he here?”

Anya stood still and tried her best to keep the smile on her lips. On the inside, Anya’s body was screaming for her to run out of there fast.

“All right. I’ll bring the girl back. What am I, an escort?” The sour woman slammed the phone down and waved for Anya to follow her. “Come on. Cain is at his desk.”

“Thank you,” Anya replied, but all the woman did was offer a grunt.

She walked behind the counter and took in the scene. It was like something off a television movie. She marched down a hallway that ended with one great room. There were rows of desks everywhere with people in suits and uniforms working. A few people were in handcuffs, too. She tightened her grip on her purse and followed Officer Loot over to where Officer Cain was sitting.

He banged his hand on the computer monitor, muttering a curse.

“Here’s your guest, Cain,” Loot snapped.

His head swiveled toward her. “Thanks, Loot. Miss Graham, please have a seat.” He motioned to the chair next to his desk.

“Whatever,” Loot mumbled while walking away.

“Pleasant woman,” Anya murmured, easing into the chair.

“Don’t worry about Officer Loot. She’s been here for a hundred years. She’s more bark than bite.” He pulled open a drawer and took some papers out.

“So, what do you need me to fill out?” she asked. She glanced around, uncomfortable being in the station.

All the memories of being in a familiar building in Atlanta came to mind.

“Well, I thought you were going to come yesterday,” Cain began.
