She sprang forward in the bed, gasping for air.

“You’re safe,” he murmured. He pushed up on his elbow and touched Anya’s shoulder.

She glanced over at him with wide eyes.

Whatever she had dreamed about, scared her.

“I’m… I’m okay,” she muttered. She tucked her hair behind her ear and breathed out a deep sigh.

She was lying. Dalton could tell by the hitch in her voice and the tremor in her hand.

“Want to talk about it?” he asked softly. Dalton reached up and rubbed her back. “I’m here if you need me.”

She turned to him with a small smile. “I’m okay now.”

She laid back down on her pillows facing him. He ran his fingers along her cheekbone and jawline.

He couldn’t stop touching her.

“Whatever you were dreaming about must have really bothered you.”

“Can we just drop it, please?” Anya asked. Her hand settled on his wrist.

He paused, staring deep into her eyes, sensing small hints of fear in them. She blinked, and what he had seen was now gone.

“Sure.” He leaned forward and pressed a chaste kiss to her lips before pulling back. He didn’t know what she was hiding, but he didn’t like the thought of a dream causing her fear. “Do you have any plans for today?”

He was hoping she didn’t. The thought of staying in bed with Anya throughout all of his off day sounded perfect.

“Actually, I do have something to do today. Can you take me back to my parents’ house?” She sat up and leaned back against the plush pillows. She kept the blanket pulled up over her breasts.

He wrestled to get the blanket off her. She giggled as she tried to keep it covered.

“You shouldn’t hide perfection,” he grumbled, pushing the blanket away from her.

She tried to fold her arms over her breasts, but he was having none of that.

“Oh no. After everything we’ve done, you are not turning shy on me.”

He reached out and gripped her by her waist and tickled her. She screamed, her legs flailing on the bed. He rolled them over to where he was hovering above her. Her breasts came into view, and he couldn’t help but lean down and give one of her nipples a kiss.

“Dalton,” she breathed. Her fingers threaded themselves in his hair.

He gently sucked the bud into his mouth.

“I have to leave. I have to go to the courthouse to fill out some papers.”

He released her nipple and lifted his head to meet her eyes. “For what?” He was curious. Why would she need to go to the courthouse? Was there a different reason she was staying with her parents than what she’d told him?

“Business-related, that’s all.”

“Want me to take you?” he offered.

“No!” she practically shouted. “I mean, no, you don’t have to do that. It will be boring.”

He sat back, suspicious about her reaction to his suggestion. She was hiding something, and he wanted to know what it was.

But he would wait. Obviously, it was something Anya didn’t want to share.
