Chapter 22

Roxxy sat on her porch and patiently watched the melee before her unfold. The sheriff’s department had arrived a few minutes behind Myles’ team members. The deputies swarmed the area, taking evidence and collecting information. Their yard was a complete circus. Spotlights lit the area. Deputies casing the property searched for evidence and clues. There were police cars, ambulances, and the paddy wagon parked on the grass in front of the house.

“You did good out there,” Shelby murmured.

Roxxy jumped slightly, having not heard her mother approach.

Shelby sat next to her on the stairs.

“You did some fancy shooting yourself.” Roxxy chuckled, glancing over at her mother.

Shelby Sutton was a force to be reckoned with. She appeared docile and sweet, but piss her off, and she’d unleash her wrath. It was Shelby who’d taught Roxxy to be strong and that she could still be a woman while brandishing her favorite gun. Their family collection was started and maintained by the lady of the Sutton family.

“Well, I had something to protect that means the world to me.” Her mother patted her on the leg. “I was a little rusty at first, but it comes back to you.”

Roxxy’s gaze landed on her Myles speaking with his team and the sheriff. As if feeling her eyes on him, he turned and glanced in her direction. Their eyes met for a brief moment. His lips curled up into his crooked grin. Her heart stuttered at his look.

“He’s a good man, Roxxy,” Shelby said, obviously noticing the heated look between them.

Roxxy gazed down at her hands with a warm feeling spreading through her chest. She was rendered speechless. Her mother’s assessment of Myles was spot on. He was one hell of a man.

He’d told her he loved her.

May not have been at the perfect time, but it was Myles. In the threat of danger, he let his true feelings be known to her. Had they not been getting shot at, she would have ripped his clothes off to show him how much she loved him.

“I know,” she replied. She peered around. “Where’s Dad?”

“He’s over there speaking with Deputy Russel.” Her mother pointed over to the police van that housed the men Myles and her father had tied up.

The deputy patted her father on the back and gave a sharp nod. Roxxy was sure her father was giving him orders. Earl Sutton was well known in these parts. He was good friends with the sheriff, and when Earl spoke, they all listened.

Roxxy bit back a yawn. It was late, almost morning. She was ready to strip her clothes off, take a hot shower, and dive into her bed. She had a funny feeling it was going to be a long while before she’d be able to do either.

What she truly wanted was to do all of that and slide into a bed with Myles’s arms wrapped around her.

Myles and his men strolled toward the house.

Her core clenched at the sight of her man. The clothes he’d worn to dinner were torn and tattered. He walked across the grass with an air of confidence. Protecting her and her family had been his top priority.

“Roxxy.” Mac nodded to her. “Mrs. Sutton.”

“Hello, Mac.” Roxxy smiled. She waved to the other men standing behind him.

These men had somehow jumped a helicopter to come save a member of their team. It was obvious that the men were close and willing to do anything to help their brother when he was in danger.

“Sergeant MacArthur, welcome to my home. I wish it were under better circumstances.” Shelby chortled. She stood and shook Mac’s hand.

“That would have been nice. You all have a lovely piece of land.” Mac gave a dry chuckle.

“Thank you.” Her mother smiled. Shelby was always proud to show off the farm. “Can I offer you fellas something to drink? I made some iced tea this morning.”

Roxxy’s gaze landed on Myles who was motioning for her.

“Excuse me,” she murmured. She stood and walked down the few steps to him.

“Come with me.” He took her hand and guided her around the corner of the house.

“What’s wrong?” She was uncertain why he needed to pull them away from everyone.
