Myles released a curse at Mac trying to be reasonable.

“He’s right. We’re up against enough as it is, we don’t need cop versus cop,” Declan chimed in.

“Well then, you go tell that to him!” Myles growled, pointing at the building. He pushed off the vehicle, anger still brimming in his chest.

Ash shifted his position and stood before Myles.

“Leave.” Ash motioned to the truck. “Go home. Go for a run or something to blow off steam.”

Myles blew out a frustrated breath and threw his hands up.

“Fine. I’m out of here.”

He grabbed the handle and swung open the door and got in his truck. He ignored Mac calling his name and hit the start button. The truck roared to life. He threw the car in drive and pulled out of his spot. He turned onto the street and hit the gas.

Roxxy rushed over to her nightstand. The sound of her phone ringing cut through the air.

She had a date tonight.

A virtual date.

With Myles.

She snatched her phone up and slid her finger across the screen. Fresh from the shower, she wanted to look her best after a day of riding. She didn’t want to appear as if she’d been out on the farm all day.

Myles’s face came on the screen, and Roxxy’s heart raced.

“Hey there, handsome,” she greeted him with a wide smile. She climbed into her bed and propped herself up on the headboard.

“Hey, Roxxy girl. How are you?” Myles’s deep voice met her ears. He looked dead on his feet and agitated.

Alarms went off.

Something was wrong.

“I’m good now you’re on the phone with me.” She offered a smile to try to get one from him. His lips curved up slightly, but it wasn’t the same. “What’s wrong?”

He smoothed a hand over his cheek and shook his head. “Nothing. I don’t want to burden you with work-related shit.”

She relaxed against the pillows. She had been worried for nothing. She understood his job was full of stress, and tension was expected for a SWAT officer.

She could help relieve his stress. She’d help take his mind off what was bothering him.

“Ah, honey, I’m sorry work sucked.” She pouted a little, allowing her spaghetti strap of her nightgown to fall to the side.

His quick intake of breath could be heard. She bit back a laugh.

Got him.

“Why don’t you tell me about it?” She was laying her accent on strong. She flung her hair over her shoulder and focused her attention on Myles. She’d been waiting for this call all day.

His eyes darkened, and he brought the phone closer. He fussed with the pillow behind his head before he seemed comfortable lying across his bed. “Not much to tell. Reeves blamed me for him not making SWAT—”

“How was that your fault?” she asked. Roxxy remembered Reeves. He was cocky and confident he was going to make the team. In the short time she’d been around the men, she could see that he wouldn’t have fit in. He had been trying too hard.

“Hell if I know. He almost caught a beatdown.” Myles gave a dry chuckle.

“Oh, really?” Her eyebrow jumped up in surprise. “You would have beat him up?”
