He outstretches his hand and allows his fingers to gently brush against my already heated skin, which his touch makes it even hotter. “No problem. You’ve had a crazy week.”

I look at him and smile at his response. I go to speak but the walkie beeps.

“Ms. Greene, we have a small situation and we need your assistance.”

“Okay, I’ll be right in.”

“Simone, do you need me to do the bar setup while I’m here? I have about an hour before I have to go home and get ready.”

“Shit, an hour? Is that where we are on time?”

“Calm down. We have about four hours since it begins at five, but Dad and I are going to the cemetery first, then getting dressed for the ceremony before we go pick up Aunt Rachel.”

“Oh. Okay. Whew, I thought I was horribly off schedule. If you want, you can set it up. The tent covers and misting fans are on their way, so hopefully we’ll have a nice and comfy, yet cool reception.”

He begins to unpack the libations and stock the fridge. “You planned a nice event for such short notice,” he says, continuing to stow away to beverages.

“Well, our parents gave us their want list, and we made sure it happened.” I chuckle a bit and then recover. “Anyway, I’ll see you later, I guess. I mean, we are standing as the witnesses.”

“True. See you later, sis.”

“Right back atcha, bro.”

We laugh as I turn away and head back inside to see what fire is simmering with the florist.

4:55 PM

The guests have all arrived and are patiently waiting for the start of the ceremony. Mom and I are being blessed by the pastor before the start of her new life as Mrs. Nina Weathers. Once he completes his prayer, he heads out to the arch where the two will be joined as one. Tears well when I see the happy glow across my mother’s face. Her smile only highlights the twinkle in her light-brown eyes.

She looks to me and holds out her hand. “Come here, Monie.”

I dab the droplets of happiness and take her palm.

“My only wish is you find someone who makes you feel the way Charles makes me feel. I know you don’t want to talk about it, and we’re not, but I wanted to let you know what your father and I had was special. But our fire died out, baby, and I had to move on with my life like he did. It’s not usually how love goes, so don’t be afraid to take chances for fear it will end up like ours did. Okay?” She tilts my face up, her eyes searching for understanding.

“Yes, ma’am.” I pull her into an embrace and fight back the tears threatening to ruin my makeup Sasha spent an hour applying, then touching up in-between photos.

We part, and she smiles when she hears the music signaling our entrance.

“Time to get hitched,” she comments.

We hold hands till we enter the hallway.

“I love you, Mom, and I’m so happy for you.” I place a kiss on her cheek before I take the first step into the living area.

I walk down the small makeshift aisle, peering at the small crowd before us. Faces familiar and not. There is one I see standing beside his dad at the altar. The way that suit hugs his body reminds me of how my legs seemingly melted to his waist. Clinging to every inch of his body as he moved slowly in and out of my pussy. His gray eyes light a path of desire within me when our gazes lock. His smile sends me over the edge, and I nearly stumble approaching my assigned position. Control yourself, missy, I think internally. I clear my throat and turn to see mother walking up to her spot. She and Mr. Weathers join hands, and the beginning starts now.

“Welcome! Charles and Nina have brought us together here for an occasion of great joy and a cause for great celebration. They have chosen each one of you to be here with them to witness their wedding vows as they join as husband and wife.”

The officiant begins the service, and I marvel at the couple, taking notice of the wrinkles by their eyes and around their lips as they smile lovingly at one another. My gaze drifts off to Lucas and he glances up and catches me in my gaze daze. The words being spoken become distant while the memories of the past week flood my mind. The good, the bad, and the unanswered. I can’t see him the same any longer. The dynamic has certainly changed, and now things are becoming even more awkward with the marriage taking place right before us.

“The time has come to exchange the rings, and the couple will recite their vows together,” the officiant says.

We both pass the rings to our parents, and they turn towards each other and speak the following:

“God and the universe have given us a second chance at happiness. I come today to give you my love, to give you my heart and my hope for our future together. I promise to bring you joy, to be at home with your spirit and to learn to love you more each day, through all the days of our lives. My love for you is endless and eternal,” they both recite.

“Charlesand Nina, you have come here today of your own free will, and in the presence of family and friends, have declared your love and commitment to each other. You have given and received a ring as a symbol of your promises. By the power of your love and commitment to each other, and by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Charles, you may now kiss your bride.”
