“It was a circus side show at my girlfriend’s parents’ house two years running. The kids started a food fight at their table. Cranberry sauce and stuffing flew across the room smacking my girlfriend’s mother in the face. Laughter erupted around the dinner table. Even her husband laughed. I must say I look forward to the holidays with her family.”

I laughed. “To bad you couldn’t record the food fight.”

Peter threw his head back laughing. “I know. Shit, I should have.” He waved his hand in the air. “Let’s get down to business. I will show you the streets.”

The two sixty-five-inch screen TV’s hanging from the tall ceilings showed young men pushing around the elderly. I clutched my fists, staring in horror.

“My girlfriend is pissed. I drive over here every week to assist you in handling the trouble on the streets, but it’s worth it.” He slid his fingers through his straight black hair.

“It is worth it. I’ll take a quick shower then suit up.”

Peter turned his attention to the two twenty-seven-inch desktop screens.

Someone knocked frantically at the door as I approached. I didn’t bother glancing out the peep hole. I swung the door open.

“Ethan!” Her sad eyes stared into mine.

“What, Malaysia!” I huffed.

“I want to apologize.” She threw her arms around my neck.

“Malaysia, I have company. Now isn’t a good time.”

She stepped back, dropping her arms at her sides. “Oh, Ok. It’s been a little over a week. Of course, you’ve moved on.” Her gaze fell to the floor.

Malaysia turned to walk away.

I ran my fingers through my hair. “Malaysia, come in.”

She hesitated then stepped inside. I closed the door behind her.

“Ethan, is that my girlfriend again?” Peter yelled.

“No.”

Malaysia’s eyes widened. “Is that your boyfriend? Are you two on the down low?”

My eyebrows wrinkled. “What? No.”

I exhaled. “Listen, only a few people know what’s about to be revealed to you.”

She nodded. I snatched her hand, pulling her down the hall into my large office.

Malaysia took in the room. “Wow!”

I removed Malaysia’s duffel bag from her shoulder, placing it on mine.

Peter stepped down from his station. “Hello, I’m Peter, Ethan’s assistant slash computer hacker.” He chuckled, stretching his hand out toward her.

“My name is Malaysia. Nice to meet you.” She palmed his hand.

“Oh, you are the woman he lost recently.” His eyebrows wrinkled. “But now your back.” He smirked.

“Yes, I am back in his life. We are friends. We’ll take things slow.” She stared into my eyes, intertwining our fingers. “What’s going on?”

“I defend the less fortunate. Many of the homeless people and elderly are harassed on our city streets. Last year, I was carjacked in the parking lot of the soup kitchen I volunteer at from time to time. The parking lot was dark. A man came out of no where pointing a gun at me. He demanded I give him my wallet and keys to my Porsche. I told him to calm down. That pissed him off. He hit me over the head twice with the butt of his revolver. He ordered I remain on the ground or he’d blow my brains out.”

Malaysia’s mouth dropped open. A tear slid down her cheek as her soft fingers ran through my curly mane.
