Avarie blew out a deep breath, watching the city fly past before her eyes. Shane navigated the busy streets in his expensive sports car. She leaned back against the plush leather seats and tried to relax.

“That’s the fourth time you’ve sighed in the last ten minutes,” Shane said. “It’s going to be fine.” He rested his hand along her thigh and gave it a squeeze.

Turning towards him, she took the time to study him. He was handsome in a rugged, business-tycoon way. It didn’t matter what he wore—suit, jeans, or nothing, he was downright sexy.

He glanced her way as if sensing her stare.

“What is it?” He raised an eyebrow at her before turning his attention back to the road.

“Why me?” she asked. She was a confident, successful woman, but this was a burning question that had been lying dormant in the back of her mind.

Why her?

He literally could have any woman he wanted and he chose to pursue her.

He took her hand in his and entwined their fingers. Lifting her hand, he guided it to his lips and placed a small, chaste kiss to the back of her hand. He slowed the car before turning down the road that would lead to her parents’ house.

“There was this day, not too long ago,” he began, cocking his eyebrow at her again.

She rolled her eyes and chuckled. “Be serious, Shane.”

He cleared his throat and glanced at her briefly.

“Okay. Serious. Fine, I’ll tell you something and I just want you to listen,” he said. “There comes a time in every man’s life when he wants something more than casual sex. There’s a need to commit. I’ve had this need to find someone who is my equal. Someone who makes me laugh, is intelligent, a go-getter, and makes me want to be a better man.”

She bit her lip to keep from responding. He’d asked for her to listen and she would. Her chest was filled with emotions she couldn’t even begin to identify.

“And it is a bonus that you’re beautiful.” He turned his gaze to her, and she saw he meant every word.

“I don’t know what to say to that,” she breathed. She’d asked him why he’d chosen her, and his response totally blew her mind.

“Well, you asked,” he said, shrugging.

Her heart raced with the thoughts of them. He was right. They were equals in every way. She wasn’t as rich as him, but she’d done well for herself with her career. Her family was well off, and she’d grown up with everything a girl could want.

“And it doesn’t bother you that I’m black?” she asked.

“Why would that even matter? It’s a little late to be asking that.” He chuckled then kissed the back of her hand again. “And if you haven’t figured it out, I love every part of your body and have tasted every part of it, so you should already know that answer.”

“Look, all of this has been so fast,” she began. Where was she going with this? She didn’t have a clue. It wasn’t as if they’d really had a heart-to-heart about what this was between them. They had gone from zero to sixty in a blink of an eye.

“I know. We did start off in an unconventional way, but that doesn’t mean this relationship has to remain—”

“Relationship?” she blurted out.

“I guess you didn’t get the memo, Avarie. You and I are in a relationship,” he announced.

Her mouth flopped a few times before closing. A silly grin spread across her face, and she shook her head.

“Well, then. My secretary and I will have to talk about making sure I get important emails,” she joked.

The car slowed, and Avarie caught sight of them pulling into her parents’ driveway. Their house was located in a quiet, plush neighborhood and was set back away from the road.

The sight of the immaculate brick home came into view. The gardens were perfectly manicured and displayed her mother’s prize flowers.

He stopped the car in the oval driveway. She blew out a deep breath and watched Shane exit and come around to her side. He opened the door and assisted her from the vehicle.
