He never wanted to separate from her.

“I didn’t need you to defend me,” she murmured. Her fingers slid up to the base of his neck and slowly rubbed circles, sending a shiver down his spine.

“I know.” He blew out a deep breath and opened his eyes. Her steady gaze was on him. “I couldn’t help myself. He was spouting all those ridiculous things, and I just saw red.”

She studied him for a second then leaned forward and landed a chaste kiss on his lips.

“I did like it, though. Seeing you go all alpha male was sexy as hell.”

He barked a laugh and slowly withdrew from her body. He instantly missed the sensation of her warm cocoon surrounding him.

“You bet your ass I’m going to defend my woman.”

Her eyes widened at his announcement.

He tipped her chin up and pressed a kiss to her lips. He lingered slightly, loving the feel of her plump mouth against his. “Now that the cat is out the bag, we don’t have to hide.”

“Shane, we really need to talk about this.” She blew out a deep breath. Worry lined her face. “But first, I need to use your bathroom.”

She brushed past him, bending down to snag her panties from the floor. The sound of her heels echoed along his marble floors until she disappeared into the adjoining room. After pulling up his pants and grabbing his jacket from the floor, he smoothed down his clothes and left his jacket off. He tossed it on the couch and walked into the bathroom.

He leaned against the doorjamb, watching Avarie wash her hands. Her clothes were straightened, and her hair was flowing down around her shoulders. Their eyes met in the mirror. He pushed off and walked to her. Standing behind her, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back against his chest.

With him resting his chin on the top of her head, they stared at each other in the mirror without a word.

“What are you afraid of?” he asked.

Worry clouded her eyes, and he wanted to wipe it away.

“My reputation. My father—”

“Your father?” he cut her off, not understanding. This was the second time she’d mentioned Fin. He wasn’t sure why she was so worried about telling her father about their relationship. “Why would you be worried about your father?”

“I told you about his rules and how we are crossing the line of an attorney-client relationship.”

Her teeth slowly gripped her bottom lip, and he had the sudden urge to turn her around to soothe that lip.

“I think you are overthinking what your father will say. Let’s just get it over with. Your father is a very reasonable man. I don’t want to lie to him or have to sneak around him. I have too much respect for him to do that to him.”

She paused and nodded. He leaned down and nuzzled his face in the crook of her neck. He breathed in her scent, memorizing it.

He’d have to find the maker of the perfume she wore so he could buy the damn company.

“I’m going to have dinner with him and my mom on Thursday. Why don’t you come with me?”

He glanced up and met her eyes in the mirror. He pulled back and turned her around to face him.

Tilting her chin up, he lowered his face to hers and covered her mouth with his. He took advantage of her gasp and slid his tongue into her mouth. His tongue coaxed hers into a duel. He pressed forward, pushing his hardening length against her.

He groaned and tore his lips from hers. Her swollen lips were a temptation he had to resist. He dragged his gaze to hers and smiled. He brushed his thumb over that plump bottom lip.

“I’ll be there, Avarie. Everything will be fine.”
