That weekend, I went out to shop with Laine.

“So, you fucked before pie?”

Laine asked as we looked through the dresses that were on the sale’s rack. Laine had been forced to come with me, as she too had been invited to the rehearsal dinner. She’d tried getting a job in Istanbul, but that hadn’t worked out.

I nodded looking over a silvery little number. “Yes, he wasn’t pleased with me just showing up at his apartment.”

“And then he asked for your number?” she asked, sounding even more confused. “Is that usually how you date?”

I shook my head, letting my lips curl in a semblance of a sarcastic smile. “Date? I don’t date.”

Laine nodded. “You’re right, I forgot you just mate occasionally.”

I laughed a bit at that. “Yes, and usually, my partners are happy with that arrangement.”

Laine shook her head, she had one steady partner. “Ty does everything I need for right now, and I’m okay with it.”

“But, do you desire his commitment?” I asked offhandedly as I spotted another possible dress to wear.

Her silence forced me to turn around and look at her. Laine’s expression had darkened, her eyes were focused on the hem of the dress that she was currently crushing in her hand. “…It doesn’t matter what I want,” she muttered before she smiled at me. It was tinged with a wealth of sadness. “Honestly, we both know Ty isn’t the one for me. He’s been my friend for too long for that. We just haven’t found people to love us. Yet.”

I felt that she spoke a half-truth. I knew two things that Tyrone had been one of the only men in Laine’s life whom she trusted, and that whoever else she’d held feelings for had long ago broken her heart, and she had made it clear she wasn’t interested in trying again.

But being a good friend, or as good as a friend as I could be, I dropped it. It was Laine’s life, and she’d figure out what she wanted sooner her later.

“How about this one?” I said, grabbing a short, slinky number off the rack. “I think you’ll cause a bit of shock and awe in this.”

She smirked, seeing the back was fully cut away. “Yes, now we’re talking.”

We had just gotten back to the apartment when my phone rang. Laine entered the house, eager to eat the take out we’d ordered. My own stomach was growling with anticipation.

The number that appeared made me smirk, he was calling already. Expecting his new acquisition to jump when he called, instead, I pressed the red-button.

“Toya?”

“Coming!” Entering the apartment, I wondered what he would do in retaliations to my ignoring his call. Would it be violent, or…more passionate? Poking the bear hadn’t ever been so much fun. When we were young, he’d been the one to choose the games and when they started. This time I would be the master of the play.

Moving passed Laine, I set my plastic near her feet. “Hey! Do you think Tyrone would like to come?”

She turned from sniffing the box that held the chicken-fried rice and gave me a suspicious. “Sure, but why—?”

I shrugged my coat off. “No reason, just thought you’d like to have a ‘partner’ to talk to when my mom starts asking about your love life, now that she’s all cuffed up.”

Laine groaned, “Why didn’t I think about that?” She slapped her forehead.

Meanwhile, I ignored another call from Connor.

“Yeah, you should bring him along, and that way, we won’t have to dance with some creeps.”

“It’s going to be that fancy of an event?” Laine asked, seeming surprised.

I nodded as I headed to my room. “Mom’s beau seems to be a bit heavy in the pockets.”

“Damn!” Lain exclaimed before muttering, “Now where the fuck can I find a heavy pocketed, big dick lover?”

A simple dinner rehearsal had become a formal affair. It seemed that Mister Blitz had called his old friends and associates to come. It had become an oddly star-studded affair, even I was a bit taken aback by the sight of cameras in the bushes. As a valet helped me from Tyrone’s car, Tyrone a six-foot lawyer, with smooth chocolate skin and almond shaped eyes, looked sharp in his tux. Something Laine had to rush purchase for him.

“Damn, you guys didn’t say we were hanging with the stars!” Tyrone exclaimed as he escorted Lain and I up the steps.
