“Didn’t you say you warned her?” Lesly asked, he knew my ways, and he sounded just as disbelieving as I was as we watched her make her way towards me.

I watched silently as she approached unfazed. I felt my eyes squint, assessing. Something wasn’t right, the normal woman would have been too scared to even look at me. This one had not only called out to me, but was now standing before me and two men, who while not purposely doing so, were impressive and intimidating.

“Are these your friends?” she asked, her voice had a rough quality to it that I’d noticed when we’d first met. It scraped along my skin. Everything she did felt like a physical touch. She drew her eyes along the length of my body. Before she looked at Lesly then Grant, her eyes stopped on his.

“I’m Toya, Celeste is my mom.” She held her hand out to Grant.

His eye’s darkened as he took her hand and lifted to his lips before introducing himself. “Grant, Grant Malcom.”

She nodded, her smile the exact same, no flutter or flinch, even as he hadn’t released her hand and rubbed the back of it with his thumb. “Ah, Grant Malcom.” She then easily took her hand and offered it to Lesly. “And you must be, the best friend of Connor’s. Hunter told me about you when we first met.”

“Y-yeah, that’s me.” Lesly startled by her friendliness, quickly took her hand and smiled. “I hope they were good stories.” Then he blanched, shooting me a look.

She laughed, her tone low. As she took her hand back, she met my gaze head on. “Isn’t it always, when it involves our Connor?” She tilted her head, a slight sharpness entering her voice.

A challenge? This pig dared to challenge me? Hadn’t she gotten the fucking clue when I warned her against exposing our past?

My hand tightened on the empty glass in my hand on reflex. Her eyes dropped to the cup, and her tone immediately lightened. “Why don’t I get you a refill, and your friends can tell me stories about your youth.” She motioned her head to where our parents were standing. “Because, I feel like tonight, they’re going to make some “secret” announcement.” With that, she took the glass out of my hand and walked over to the bar.

I watched her, feeling not only challenged, but curious.

It seems the pig was far more interesting than I thought.
