“I-I won’t tell anyone,” I desperately said, now slightly pushing at his chest. “J-just stop!” I gave a final weak shove, and he finally relinquished after giving another show of power by slowly releasing my throat.

He took a step back and fixed his suit jacket. He sniffed, turning his eyes to the door. “Good, I’ll see you at the table.” With that, he left, his scent still stirring in the air.

Leaning against the wall, I stared out over the city, my hand drifting to my neck, where I mildly wondered if a bruise remained. He’d always been brute, everything about him was force and strength.

Slowly, my hand moved to my mouth, the fingers trailing over the lips that were stretched into a wide smile. My heart was racing, and blood moved swiftly through me, my cheeks felt hot.

A flash of high school came to mind--me kneeling on gravel in the back of the school as Connor forced me to hold text books over my head. The pain had been excruciating, and the emotional burden worse and yet…

The door opened jerking me from my thoughts. Clearing my throat, I quickly fixed my shirt and passed the couple exiting without a word.

Rage and interest ran wild within.

As I arrived back at the table, I gave my mother a small nod that everything was alright before my eyes drifted to Connor, who I decided to offer a bright smile. His eyes narrowed slightly on me before his attention was taken by his father.

The food finally arrived, and as I ate the delicious crab pasta and listened to more stories from how my mom had met Hunter, my mind was filling with all sorts of sordid ideas.

All focused on the man who sat near me, the man who didn’t know the type of kitten he’d taunted.
