Karma didn’t know how long she’d been asleep before the sounds of traffic echoed around her. She hated it when her neighbors left for work at the crack of dawn. He had one of those big loud trucks that sounded like something that belonged on a racetrack whenever he started it.

Somehow, it never failed that whenever she was trying to sleep in, he would be up early, off to partake in some adventure. She tried to roll over to block out the sound.

Her eyes fluttered open when she was unable to move.

She found herself staring at the leather of the back of her front passenger seat, the shadowy darkness startling her. Why was she looking at the seat of her car? Confusion danced across her face as she glanced around the car.

Then, the lights registered, casting deeper shadows throughout the car. Why was she seeing flashing yellow lights? She moved slightly into a semi-sitting position, so she could see between the seats of her car.

Bright red lights were a steady glow far below the flashing yellow ones. She sat up abruptly. Looking around panicking.

“Oh my God, I’m about to participate in an alien abduction.”

She fought to scramble out of her blanket. She had to get out of the car.

Escape before the captured her.

What if they decided to probe her?

She has never been probed before, but she imagined it would be unpleasant. She should have paid attention to her cousins more when they tried to get her to watch those Sci-fi movies. It seemed that most of the alien abductions took place when a person was broken down on the side of the road. She groaned as she continued to fight her way free of her blanket. She’d probably fallen into a trap the alien set.

That was it.

They made her car stop working so she would be vulnerable on the side of the road. Just ripe for the picking.

She could read the headlines now, “Dumb Black Girl Abducted from Mountain Side.” Her mother would be held in her father’s arms as the Newscaster interviewed them.

Her father would be stoic, while her mother--grief-stricken, would be crying big old crocodile tears for Karma.

Wailing for the aliens to bring her baby back and to take her instead. And of course, they would find the stupidest of her cousins to interview, probably Andrew; he could be so dumb at times.

He would say something inappropriate like, “We told Karma to watch Alien Abduction with us then she would be prepared when she entered those mountains. Everyone knows aliens attack on deserted roads and the sides of mountains. If she had watched the movie, she would know what to expect so she could free herself. Now, instead, she is trapped on their mother ship transported to who knows where in the universe. I hope she brings us back a souvenir if she ever makes it back.”

She could see it now.

No. She had no idea what to do. How to escape from the aliens. Her eyes scanned frantically for a weapon.

At some point in her struggles, she had dropped her key fob onto the floor. It was too dark for her to located and besides it wasn’t like she could drive her car anywhere. The aliens had disabled it. Karma jumped and screamed when there was a tap on the window next to where she was sitting.

“Oh my God, I don’t wanna get probed.” She cried out as she finally kicked free of her blanket and made a dive for the opposite door. She made sure she grabbed the baseball bat on the floor, tumbling out into the road as soon as the car door opened. She popped up to her feet ready to run.

“I have a baseball bat, and I’m not afraid to hit a homer.” She shouted warning the alien standing on the other side of her car while she agitatedly twisted the bat testing her grip on it.

She lifted the bat to her shoulders prepared to swing through the pitch as her batting coach always insisted that they did when she was a member of her little league team. Karma was determined to hit a home run tonight.

“Ma’am,” a voice called out from the far side of her car. She let out a small screech of terror. Well at least her alien abductors spoke English. She circled the car in the opposite direction of the voice, bringing her closer to the flashing yellow lights and the tail lights of the truck.

Truck? She slowly lowered the bat at the sight of the flatbed tow truck.

Wait a minute? The DMV now issued intergalactic driver’s licenses? Karma took several deep breaths. She attempted to clear her mind and think rationally. Aliens didn’t drive trucks and they definitely did not speak English. At least not the ones from outer space, she wasn’t so sure about the ones that came over the border.

“Ma’am, do you need a tow?” The deep rough voice was ripe with amusement, it came from the other side of her car.

Now that she had calmed down a little and her eyes were adjusting to the lights, she could see a shadowy figure standing on the far side of her car — a very large shadow. She was unable to see his face clearly but knew that the threat of alien abduction was over. He was definitely human.

“Ma’am it looks like you’re in need of tow?” The deep voice spoke again causing a visceral reaction deep within Karma.
