The next morning, I get to the job site at five a.m. Ms. Brown was a delicious distraction yesterday and calmed me down as soon as she stepped in the building. In fact, when I called Mark to tell him about her, he wanted more information. I asked Darlene to find out all she could and send it to me. Last night, while I was lounging, I read a few articles about her works around the parish. Like how she was an assistant to a seamstress while attending school—that’s how she honed her skills. And she does lots of charitable things for underprivileged kids in the community and even volunteers.

“Here early, boss?” Jerome says as he sees me entering the office.

“Yeah. I had to make sure you guys did some work today.”

We share a laugh, and he goes back to sanding the bar. I check the invoices on my desk and confirm the delivery of the items. Once complete, I stamp them and put them on Darlene’s desk for payment. See, I run my business as simple as possible. Darlene is my assistant and accounting department. No need to have multiple people when one can do the job. I handle most of my calls and errands and pitch in when she or the others get swamped.

I check my email and there’s a new bill for the rock quartz Kara ordered. The cost is drastically lower than what was purchased previously. Even with getting a person to cut it the way Kara wants it, I will still be saving a few thousand dollars.

One thing’s for sure, I can’t stop thinking about her. She was in my shower, in my bed, even in my dreams. That may be the real reason I’m up so early. I had a Viagra-like erection that woke me from my dreams of me fucking her intensely. I contemplated relieving myself but knew it wouldn’t satisfy my need. Instead, I went for a run, battling the thought of whether she could ever date a man like me. You know, Caucasian, blond hair, blue eyes. After my run, I showered again, then came to work.

After my short memory lane stroll, I print the bill, stamp it with a smile, then add it to Darlene’s to-do box. Since my inbox is empty, I take a walk around the building, checking the craftsmanship. I look over every inch of the bar setups and mark them off my list. I scan around and see my design coming to life. Sure, I’ve done this a few hundred times, but it seems more alive this go around. Perhaps Ella wasn’t the person for this building, maybe Kara is, I think to myself. Since she walked in yesterday, this place has taken on a different vibe.

“Morning, Brent,” Darlene says, sauntering in at eight a.m. Her hair is pulled back into a bun with streaks of grey running through her jet-black mane. She’s wearing her glasses today, and she has a cup of coffee in her hand.

“Long night?” I ask, wondering why she appears so tired.

“My daughter came in town last night from Houston, on break from her studies. Naturally, me and David stayed up and visited with her for a while. She brought her fiancé with her, too.”

She yawns, I take her work bag from her, and we walk back up the stairs to the offices.

“You know, if you want to knock off for the day, you can.”

“No, no. You have that meeting with Kara today, and someone needs to be here to mind the store.”

I feign fake shock, and she sees right through my façade. “Oh, that is today, isn’t it? The new designer with the um, um…”

“Nice ass,” she says, laughing.

“Impeccable skills is what I was going to say.” Ass is what I was thinking. “Anyway, yes, I think you should be here. I may be placing orders from her office if I can get in touch with Mark for approval. I also have that call with the Ingrams today about the Jamaica project. Do you know if they secured the land for the build yet?”

“Not yet, Brent. I will follow up with them later. Also, Ella is asking for a full day’s pay for yesterday.”

“That’s fine. Give it to her. Make sure Ms. Brown gets the same and close out those bills on your desk before running payroll. I’m going to the lumber yard and then off to Kara’s. Call me if you need anything.” I grab my keys and leave, counting down the minutes until I see her again.
