“Um, well. I’m here at the school, but Josiah isn’t.”

“What?” I gasp. Terror and adrenaline immediately fill every part of my body.

“The front office at the school told me his father picked him up,” she says.

“Oh fuck. No.” Shock spreads from my chest, numbing all my limbs. I can barely breathe. Patrick takes the phone from me, letting Shannon know we’ll take care of things and ending the call.

“That son of a bitch,” I say between gasps. Breathing comes easier as my need to take immediate action grows. I waffle between wanting him to be a father to Josiah and terror that he might not actually be caring for him but instead, just using him to spite me. Either way, I need to know where my son is. Right. Now.

Like I flipped a switch, a list of necessary tasks forms in my mind and I compulsively start with the most important. Grabbing my phone back from Patrick, I quickly dial Justin’s number. No answer. Shit. Next up, checking to see if somehow they’re at home.

Jumping out of my seat, I practically shove Patrick out of my way as I stride purposefully to the door. He follows me, matching my speed.

“What?” I snap.

“You’re going to need this.” He hands me my purse, my car keys obviously jingling inside.

“Thanks.” One-word answers are all I have time for, and he’s lucky he’s even getting those.

It takes less than a minute for me to peel out of the parking structure. As I race home, a thought niggles at the back of my mind; I was making out with my boss while my son disappeared. With effort, I push it back. I can’t think about that, at least not yet. Right now, my full focus is on finding Josiah. Anyone who tries to stop me better watch out.
