Fuck it. He might as well know.

“Yes, we lost her,” I said. “Lost her scent when we were tracking her. Thought she came here to get scent blockers or something.”

“Idiots!” Ruby’s father growled. “You should have marked her, protected her!”

“I’m sorry I wasn’t quick enough...” I began, but we were distracted by Jasper joining us at the doorstep.

“And you,” he pointed at Jasper, who had appeared from around the corner. “Why the fuck are you still around?”

“When I heard she was lost, I wanted to look for her too. I care about Ruby,” said Jasper. “I’m just as disappointed in why Wayne didn’t mark her.”

“Sir, we didn’t want to force her,” I explained, guilt lacing my words. “We might have given her too much autonomy in her situation because of her feelings for Jasper.”

“Enough!” Benjamin barked, his eyes bulging in worry as hequickly changed into a pair of sneakers. “Marrok has her. You need to find my daughter.”

“Wait, Marrok?” asked Jasper, his eyes widening at the mention of his name. “What the fuck does he have anything to do with it?”

“I’ll explain it to you in a minute,” I muttered to him as Benjamin slammed the door in our faces.

We left Benjamin’s house, our steps heavy with the weight of failure. The night was cool as it wrapped around us, but it offered no comfort against the gnawing worry for Ruby.

“You said she had feelings for me. Is that true?” Jasper asked quietly, his eyes searching mine for answers.

“Unfortunately, yes,” I replied, my voice thick with regret. “But we should have protected her better. It’s completely my fault.”

Jasper sighed and clenched his fists at his sides. “I’m going to do right by her. I’ll join your pack, Wayne, if you’ll allow it. We need to be a stronger pack.”

I mulled over his offer as we listened to Davy and Rufus muttering behind us. I reached up to grab a small green apple from one of the many trees. As I chewed on the apple, I contemplated having a bigger pack, which was all an alpha wanted. We already had an omega, but she was lost. I knew that he cared deeply for Ruby and that his loyalty would make him a valuable addition to our pack. If we were to stand a chance against enemies, this was the best course of action.

“You sure about this?” I asked.

“Yeah, but don’t think you can boss me around,” Jasper warned, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Ask Davy and Rufus,” I said, nodding toward them. “They’ll tell you how it is.”

Rufus raised his eyebrows and grinned. “Wayne can be an ass at times, but we’re family.”

“I’m sure about this,” said Jasper with a deep breath. “This is for Ruby, but I will also pledge my loyalty.”

Excitement coursed through me as I felt that kindred bond that only happened when I accepted a member into my pack. We shifted into our wolf forms, the strength of our beast taking over. The rest of the pack followed suit, encircling Jasper beneath the silver moonlight. We barked and howled a primal song of unity and brotherhood.

Ready to save our omega?I communicated telepathically to my pack.

Yes-they chorused at the same time with determination. We all lifted our heads to the moon, howling from our chest. We would search far and wide for Ruby, destroying anyone who stood in our way.

Ruby

The smellof tomato sauce filled the air as Marrok hummed contentedly in the kitchen. I was lying on the couch, my heart pounding in horror, knowing I was stuck with him in this godforsaken cabin.

He never left my side, and it felt suffocating.

“Dinner’s ready, my love,” Marrok’s voice cut through my thoughts, his golden eyes locked on me as he set two plates of spaghetti down at the dining table. Without waiting for me to struggle up from the couch, he walked over to me and gently pulled me to my feet by the hands while kissing me tenderly on the cheek. He looked more terrifying without his black robe on. There were dandruff flakes all across his black shirt and scars running down his bare, pale arms.

I shuddered at his scent of spices.

“I can walk,” I said, pulling my hands from his with force.

“You’re like a delicate egg, Ruby,” he whispered lovingly into my ear, making me cringe. “I love you more than you can ever imagine.”
