“Of course, sweetheart,” said Wayne. “As alphas, it’s our duty.”

I nodded, biting my lip.

As I walked down the long corridors, I felt self-conscious wearing just a bathrobe in such an expensive hotel. The lobby reeked of cologne as the human men and women lounged on the couches. The lobby gleamed with polished marble and gold accents.

Jasper was sitting by himself, drinking a soda. His scent reached me from afar, bringing back memories of being with him. I wanted to cry, but I needed to pull myself together.

He didn’t look at me as I approached him. I really hoped he didn’t hate me.

Taking a deep breath, I sat down next to him, trying to muster up the courage to talk. Jasper still didn’t turn his head to look at me, and frustration started to rise within me.

“You don’t have a right to be mad,” I said in a low voice because the lobby was full of people. I was getting odd stares already for my state of clothes, but I didn’t care. He didn’t say anything in response and instead took a long sip of his drink. “An omega needs a pack.”

He finally turned his head to look at me.

“Do you really believe that? I was taking care of you just fine.”

“Idobelieve that,” I snapped, having enough of his arrogance as I got up.Why wasn’t he acknowledging that he left without telling me?

Rushing towards the elevator, I felt my bathrobe swishing around my legs from my fury. I had made an ass of myself walking down here half-naked, and Jasper didn’t have the decency to talk to me like a normal person.

“Wait,” he said, stepping into the elevator with me.

“No,” I said, trying to side-step him and leave. But he had already pressed the button to make the elevator doors close.

“Ruby,” he sighed, stopping me from pressing the number on the pad. “Listen, you ran away with me, and I never expected to see you wrapped up in other alphas’ cocks.”

“What the hell, Jasper?” I spat, the pain from my heat rising again. “You have no idea what it’s like to be in heat, and I don’t need an alpha to tell me what to do.”

“But I’m your alpha.”

“When did I ever agree to that?”

“Since the moment you agreed to run away with me,” he countered, finally pressing the number seventeen on the elevator pad when he saw me clutching my stomach.

“Well, I’m not anyone’s omega,” I said. “You were the one who left me when I woke up after several hours of sleeping and being in heat. I expected you to be there.”

“And I’m sorry about that,” he said. “But that doesn’t give you an excuse to let another alpha fuck you in the middle of the street.”

“Save it, Jasper,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest. The elevator hummed as it carried us upward, the tension between us palpable. My heart pounded in my chest, torn between the desire for him and the anger I felt.

The elevator’s metallic walls seemed to close in on me. My fists clenched at my sides, my nails biting into my palms as I contemplated what to do. I didn’t want Jasper to be in the room while the other alphas knotted me.

But my inner omega wanted him, too.

“Tell me, Jasper,” I said, my voice trembling. “Why did you leave?”

He smirked bitterly. “It was just to get ice for you. But what does it matter now? You moved on pretty damn quickly.”

My heart ached at his words, but I refused to let him see my pain.

“You have no idea what it’s like to be an omega in heat, Jasper,” I sighed. “I needed an alpha, and you weren’t there.”

His jaw clenched, and his blue eyes were icy cold.

“And whose fault is that?” he growled. “You could’ve waited for me, but instead, you chose to forget about me the moment I left.”

“Jasper, you don’t understand,” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. “I didn’t plan any of this. You left, and I thought I was going to die. I was in a state of delirium.”
