Breanna

“Good morning,”Auntie Julie croaked as she put a pot of coffee on.

“Morning,” I said, yawning as I stretched on the hard floor. I checked my phone first thing to see if there were any replies to my ad, and when I saw a little red message pop up, I quickly opened it.

It was a short message:

Hello Breanna, I saw your ad, and I am interested in your cleaning service. I’m offering fifty dollars per hour if you’re interested. Let me know, and I can give you a call to setup your interview.

“Oh my god,” I said out loud.

“What?” asked my aunt in a panicked voice, still shaken from last night’s events.

“No, it’s nothing,” I said quickly to soothe her. “Some guy is willing to pay fifty dollars an hour.”

“Oh, that’s a boatload,” she said while mixing the sugar into her coffee cup. “But we need to discuss moving to a different state, so don’t get your hopes up.”

“It’s too late,” I said, already replying back.

“That’s not good,” she said disapprovingly as she settled into the only chair in the trailer and sipped her coffee. She had a lot of patience, but I needed to push it just this time. It was too much money to refuse.

“I need to get ready,” I said excitedly as I rushedoff to the bathroom. I quickly brushed my teeth and showered, changing into my casual jeans with rips in them and a white T-shirt. After spritzing a little bit of perfume on to save the little that was remaining in the bottle, I looked at it, annoyed. I knew my aunt was using it every day before going to work to cover up the smell of her cigars.

Oh well, after I got this job, we wouldn’t have to worry about a shortage of perfume. And I would make sure I would damn well get the job.

Walking into the kitchen, I pulled out the carton of eggs and decided I’d just make a quick breakfast. My aunt and I both hated to cook. It’s not like we had a mate or children to take care of, and that freedom was nice.

As I sat down to eat, my phone started to ring, and I quickly answered, ready to seal the deal with my new client.

“Hi, this is Bree’s Cleaning Services,” I said in a chipper professional tone. “This is Breanna speaking.”

“Hello, Breanna,” said a deep voice on the other end, which sent an odd nervous feeling through me. “My name is Zaff. Glad to know you’re interested. I’d love to have a short chat with you to make sure we’re a good fit. What time works best for you?”

“Today is fine,” I said.

“Perfect. I can make arrangements in an hour. Does that work?”

“Yes,” I said almost breathlessly. I’d never heard a man have such a deep voice like that, and he sounded hot as hell. Or he could look gross in real life, I thought. I had to calm down my pounding heart.

After hanging up, I hadn’t realized my face was red until my aunt pointed it out. I scowled and quickly grabbed a purse, making my way out of the trailer. The address he had sent me showed me that it would at least be a thirty-minute travel from here. This was one of those days where I wished Ihad a car instead of sitting behind some sweaty guy with layers of dirt.

Once I was on the bus, I was able to find a seat at the very back to avoid talking to anyone, and I settled in to read a book I had brought along with me for the trip. This book was particularly dark, which made me squirm. The sun streaming in forced me to squint my eyes, but there was no way I was going to not read the delicious chapter I was on.

The bus stoppedat the destination, and I thanked the bus driver on my way out. It was a good thirty minutes taking two buses, but I was finally on the street where Zaff lived. As I walked, I saw homes I’d never seen in my life on top of hills with long driveways. Homes that made me feel so out of place here. I started the long trek up the winding pathway that could allow a car to drive up to the house.

Maybe ordinary people weren’t supposed to be walking here.

I felt so out of place as I gazed at the trees around me, which lined both sides of the pathway before me. After a while, my legs started to ache from the long hike up to the house, away from normal society.Wow, were they millionaires? Or even billionaires?I couldn’t imagine living up here away from everyone and looking down at everyone like they were peasants.

Starting to get out of breath, I paused dry-mouthed as I rested my hands on my knees. I wish I had brought water with me.

I felt so gross, sweaty, and thirsty right now.

The house was just ten feet away from me, and I could see their driveway with four expensive-looking sports cars. Damn, they were living the life that I never had. When I caught my breath, I tied up my medium-length brown hair into aponytail since my neck was dripping in sweat. I opened my purse and grabbed a napkin, wiping my neck with it. I wish I had a portable perfume or something.

Maybe I’d buy it with my first paycheck.

Walking directly to the house after catching my breath, I looked at my clunky black watch first and saw that it was past five minutes when the interview would happen. I never put into consideration the distance I’d have to travel.
