“You’re more than enough,” I said, kissing her forehead. “I will drop you off at home now, and I look forward to seeing you again on Monday for work.”

She laughed at that and lifted her face to kiss me on the lips. My heart stopped when she did that, explicitly trusting me.

“I look forward to seeing you, too,” she said in a breathy whisper.

Chapter Twenty

BREANNA

“What do you want to get?” Aunt Julie asked while we were waiting at the drive-thru on my birthday, which fell on a Sunday this year.

It was a sunny, comfortable day with our stack of books from the library sitting in the back of our rusty car that she had bought with the money I gave her. I knew I could afford to buy books now, but I needed the comforting feeling I had every year for our birthdays.

And it was to go to the library and buy food. Our birthday tradition.

“Hmm,” I said as her eyes glittered with excitement. “We could definitely afford more now, so let’s go all out.”

“That’s what I’m talking about,” she said. “Order whatever you want. We’re next in line.”

The car squeaked as she pressed the accelerator to move a spot forward. My chair was constantly moving around, compared to the luxury cars I had been riding in with the alphas.

“I’ll go with cheese bites, a burger, and fries,” I said. “And maybe we’ll throw in a bucketof hashbrowns.”

Aunt Julie gave them our order, and in a few minutes, I was holding a bunch of hot food on my lap, which was in a bag.

As we drove back, we had a little heart-to-heart talk about home.

“What do you think your parents are up to now?” she asked.

“Probably the same old miserable life,” I said. “Mom is probably getting put down like usual, with Rodmon not standing up for her.”

“What do you think they named your brother?”

That was a sore subject for me.

Even though I’d never met my little brother, I desperately wanted to see him. To hold him and tell him that he had an older sister who loved him.

“No idea,” I said, holding back tears as I held onto the food tighter. “He would be five years old by now.”

“I know you want to see him. I do, too,” she said.

“It’s not safe for us to go back,” I said, letting out a heavy sigh. “But I so wish I could see him.”

“I know sweetie.”

During the rest of the drive home, I contemplated what would have happened if I stayed there. My life would have been miserable. I would have ended up working forever as a housemaid at my family’s home, taking in all the abuse. I would have probably been made to marry a beta and would have never gotten to experience being with these alphas.

The next day,I was ready for work and dressed to go while waiting for my ride.

Yesterday was a fun, relaxing day reading with my aunt and eating all the snacks from the gas station she worked in. Ifelt like I hadn’t really worked ever since getting hired by the alphas, and yet I was making more money than I had ever had.

I was surprised to see Zaff’s car pull up on the side of the road where I usually waited for the limo. I could see the rest of his pack inside the car through the tinted windows. They were smiling at me, and Ruston got out of the car to open the back door for me.

“I need to sit next to her,” grunted Oscar.

“She’ll sit between us then,” said Ruston, and I smiled. Even though these alphas acted like macho men, they couldn’t erase their competitive nature.

Chad was sitting up front on the passenger side, and Zaff was driving.
