I nod, wishing like hell all of this works out, needing the lawyer to find that loophole or for Nick to find a way to get back here without the massive ding to our finances.

I pull into the parking lot, feeling slightly bad that we’re here on New Year’s Day, shocked that they are even open, but grateful we can get this done before Nick has to leave. I can’t imagine being here without him. I know he’d be crushed if he missed seeing the baby.

“You ready?” I ask him, my thoughts pushed aside for a few minutes as we focus on what’s important right now.

“Fuck yes. Max said the baby should look like a baby now and not just a blob or a bean. He said when Harper had an ultrasound early on, it was like a bean, and he was embarrassed to admit he had no idea which end was the head and which end was the ass.”

I laugh out loud at Nick’s comment, not only dying at the conversation those two were having, but also because I could see Nick thinking the same thing.

“Think we’ll get to find out the sex today?” Nick now asks, and my mouth drops open, shaking my head.

“I don’t want to know,” I tell him, shocked that he wants to know. I guess we didn’t really talk about that at all.

“Seriously?” he asks, sounding as equally shocked as I am. “I kinda do want to know,” he now admits, clenching his teeth together as he wrinkles up his nose, waiting for my response.

“Really? Shit, we didn’t talk about this. I don’t want to know. There are very few things in life that are a surprise anymore. Don’t you want to be surprised?”

“If that’s what you want, then yes, I want to be surprised,” Nick quickly says, smiling at me. He takes my hand in his, pressing a kiss to my palm. “I love you, Lis and it doesn’t really matter if the baby is a boy or a girl, as long as the baby is healthy and so are you.”

“Are you sure?” I ask him as we exit the car and head into the building.

“Absolutely, but we’ll see how you feel about it once you see that little pear on the screen,” Nick says, winking at me.

“I guess that’s true, I might change my mind.”

NICK

“So, are we ready?” the tech asks, smiling at both of us.

I glance at Lis, lying on the bed beside me, her hand in both of mine, my fingers gently twisting her engagement and wedding rings. “I’m ready,” I say, smiling at her.

“Me too,” she says, smiling back at me.

I lean over and press a soft kiss to her lips before sitting back, turning my gaze to the tech. “We’re ready.”

She smiles at us before she gently places the probe on Lis’ stomach. “Alright, let’s take a look,” she says, almost to herself as she clicks away at the keyboard, her eyes on the monitor as she slowly moves the probe around.

I rest my elbows on the bed, my lips against Lis’ knuckles, both of our eyes fixed on the screen as we wait, a mix of nervous and excited. My heart is pounding in my chest, my foot bouncing under the bed. For a few moments though, nothing happens and then the tech turns to us both and smiles.

“Okay Mom and Dad,” she says, hitting a button. “Here’s your baby.” The screen changes to reveal an image, that although slightly blurry, is still unmistakably a tiny human.

“Holy shit,” I breathe out.

The tech smiles as she moves the probe around. “So,” she says with a nod, her eyes still on the screen. “I’m seeing ten tiny fingers, and...” The probe moves again. “Ten little toes. Everything looks good.”

“Baby is healthy?” I ask, knowing this is the only thing that matters.

The tech smiles, as she adjusts a dial before the room is suddenly filled with the now familiar sound of our baby’s heartbeat. “Good strong heartbeat,” she says. “And the fetus looks good, so yes, bub is looking healthy.”

I turn to Lis, a huge smile on my face. “Oh my god.”

Lis laughs, her eyes wet with unshed tears as she whispers, “That’s our baby.”

My grin widens as I kiss her knuckles. “Our baby,” I repeat, my voice low.

I love the sound of those two words;our baby. Saying them out loud, I can’t even imagine us not having this baby now. I don’t care that it’s earlier than we would have planned, that it’s unexpected or that it’s going to completely change our lives.
