“I thought the blocks on the diapers were cute but we can pick out more patterns. There are lots.” There were more than I’d expected, so I’d stuck with something simple.

“I…and I…” Milo yawned again and his lids seemed to get even heavier. “If I…using my…blocks…”

Oh.

“I’m fine either way. You can use it or it can be just for fun.” After seeing all the different patterns, I was starting to understand why some of the Daddies online had made them sound more like a fashion accessory than something they were using for practical purposes.

“Okay.” Milo wasn’t awake enough to worry about it and clearly took my answer at face value. “I’m gonna be cute, Daddy.”

And that meant Dally would be filled in first thing too.

I was really going to have to work to keep Victor competitive with Dally.

“Let’s see how cute.” Helping him hop up on the bed, I laughed when he just flopped back and closed his eyes. “Daddy’s doing the work, huh?”

He might’ve laughed but it was an odd sound that was cut off by another yawn.

Someone needed more sleep.

“I’m…” He peeked his eyes open, but whatever he was going to say was lost as I picked up the diaper and he got distracted. “Blocks.”

“That’s right. Bottom up. Let’s put your blocks on.” Milo was delightfully uncoordinated but he managed to help make the process slightly easier than if I were doing it myself. “There we go.”

Little bit of the lotion I was given.

Diaper up through the legs.

Tapes in place.

“You look wonderful.” Leaning over him, I kissed his nose and gave his diaper a pat as I straightened. “Jammie time.”

“Cute…I’m so…fancy diapers are cute. I’m going to…” His words trailed off again as I held up coordinating jammies in the same bright red color that matched the blocks on the diaper. “Very cute.”

And getting more and more tired by the second.

“That’s right.” The jammies were much more difficult than the diaper, and I made a vow that he was going to be getting to bed earlier going forward, but eventually we got him dressed. “You’re the cutest boy ever.”

Even if it had been a workout.

His smile said he liked the compliment but his words were gone as his mouth stretched open again. “I…”

“You are going to climb up in the bed and close your eyes.” Helping him shift around made things move faster, but he was out before his head hit the pillow. “And he’s down for the count.”

But a Daddy’s job was never done.

“Laundry. Zipper. Lunch for him that doesn’t involve just a sandwich. Plug in his phone.” There had to be other things I was forgetting, but for a first-time Daddy and caregiver, I thought by the time I went to bed I was doing pretty good.

Well, I was doing good until he started talking in his sleep.

Being woken up from a dead sleep by Milo mumbling to himself was an interesting experience. “Peas…yes. That’s. But mac and cheese. Yes.”

He was hungry?

It probably took me entirely too long to figure out what was going on, but by the time I could see him moving in the darkness and he started to sit up, my brain had connected the dots. “Shh…come here.”

He didn’t seem like he could hear me at all but he didn’t fight me when I pulled him closer. “I have a drink for you.”

“Milk.” Milo was blinking at me funny but let me ease him back down to the bed again. “Hungry.”
