Ainsley pulls away slightly, tilting her head back to look at me as her brown eyes search mine with desperation. “I need you to tell me the truth about something.”

My brow furrows in confusion, but I nod. “No lies or secrets between us ever.”

“Does Nolan know anything about me? I need to know how much he knows.”

I tilt my head to the side, my eyes bouncing back and forth between hers. “He knows enough. Why do you ask?”

“What the fuck, Killian,” she breathes, her eyes widening in a panic. “I know that they read the police report, they know enough information about us being connected in that way, but no one knows about our relationship.”

“We’re good, baby,” I assure her, cupping her chin as I drop my face down to hers. “I promise to keep you safe. No one will know about us. I won’t jeopardize your life and your future again.”

I capture her lips with mine in a soft, gentle assault. She sighs in my mouth, her lips parting as I swipe her bottom lip with my tongue. I slide my tongue over hers, tasting her as our mouths melt together. Our surroundings fade away and we’re caught up in the moment, completely lost in one another.

A soft knock on the door grabs both of our attention. Ainsley quickly steps away from me, my arms falling to my sides as she glances around with her eyes wide. “It’s okay,” I whisper to her.

I walk over, opening the door as one of the nurses stands on the other side with a small cup of water and medicine cup with pills in her other hand. She holds them out to me.

“Time for your morning meds and then you should probably head to breakfast.” She looks past me, glancing at Ainsley with a curious look on her face.

Ainsley quickly steps to my side. “Are you good to hook up the phone then? Nolan said that there’s a phone jack by the desk.”

Glancing down at her, I nod. “Yeah, I can handle it then.” I take the cup of meds from the nurse, tossing them into my mouth as I wash them down with the cup of water.

“Are you ready to go to breakfast now?” She asks, her eyes bouncing back and forth between Ainsley and I. I can’t tell if there’s suspicion in her expression, but she’s definitely curious. And considering that Ainsley was in here with the door closed, it doesn’t exactly look good for us.

“Yep.” I smile at her, tossing the cups into the trash can by my desk. I turn to Ainsley as she inches closer to the door. “Thanks for dropping off the phone, Ainsley.”

As she steps into the doorway, she glances at me, her eyes filled with panic as a pink tint washes over her face. “You’re welcome.”

Her words are short and I watch her disappear out into the hall as she steps past the nurse. I look back at the nurse, giving her a blank stare and a shrug.

“Stay away from her, Killian,” she warns as she motions for me to follow after her. I step out into the hallway with her, pulling my bedroom door shut behind me. “You need to focus on your recovery and getting involved with someone else who’s in recovery is a bad idea.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lie through my teeth, staring straight ahead as I fall in step beside her, heading toward the dining hall. “She was just dropping a phone off for Nolan.”

“Hmph,” the nurse mutters under her breath. “Just stay away from her, okay?”

I nod along to appease her, giving her the glare that she’s used to seeing from me. We fall into a silence and she disappears to the nurses’ station as we get closer to the dining hall. I fall into line, grabbing my breakfast before taking a seat at the same table that I do every morning. No one bothers to come close to me with the permanent scowl that adorns my face.

She can warn me to stay away from her, but her words don’t mean a fucking thing to me.

Nothing will keep me away from Ainsley.

FIFTEEN

AINSLEY

My feet can’t carry me quickly enough away from him. My hands shake as I hold my badge up to the keypad. I can feel the anxiety in my knees and I shift my weight impatiently on my feet as I wait for the lock to click. Time is suspended and it feels like an eternity passes as I stand here fucking waiting.

The light flashes green. The lock clicks. My palm is sweaty as I wrap my hand around the door handle and jerk it open. I don’t wait for it to close behind me, pulling on it with such force that the heavy door slams shut behind me.

The lobby is empty. My heart pounds erratically in my chest, the sound of my blood pumping whooshing through my ears. I press my back against the door, leaning into it with all of my weight as I let out the breath that I didn’t know I was holding.

My chest heaves as I suck in breath after breath, inhaling and exhaling in a fucking panic. I knew before we started that this was a bad idea. Anything that ever happens between Killian and I is a bad idea.

Before, my dad was the first one who had ever actually caught us. He didn’t catch us in the act, but the two of us in bed together was enough to have a growing suspicion. Arlo was suspicious too, but she never had evidence.

My mom almost caught us walking in when Killian hid under the covers in my bed. Ezra had actual proof that could put Killian in jail.
