“Yes, you did, but you’re only proving my point.”

“That was your G-mama, but I’ve had three husbands and too many boyfriends to name behind me. They all had one thing in common, the were loving relationships.”

I pinch my lips to prevent the myself from saying what I feel.

“You don’t believe me?” At my sustained silence, Glamma stands over me. “Are you serious right now?”

I shrug and ask her a bombshell of a question. “Are you in love with Pedro?”

She turns her back on me to fiddle with the items on her vanity. “Why are you turning this around on me?”

“Because every time he comes up, you avoid talking about him. Is this one of those loving relationships I’m supposed to learn from?”

Glamma lowers her head and a note enters her voice that pangs in my chest. “You really know how to poke at a sore spot. You want to know why I refuse to talk about what we have? Because I know that one day he will want to settle down and start his own family, and I’m past being able to give him those things.” She takes a watery breath and faces me. “I started out thinking we would have some fun and that be the end of it, and nothing has changed. We enjoy each other’s company, but when the time comes, I will set him free. That’s a facet of love, too.”

“Oh, Glamma…” I rush to hug her.

Onyx pats me on the shoulder, her strength returning with each second that passes. “Kiwi, baby, love isn’t the same for all relationships. You have to figure out what it looks like for you and Cameron. No one else can tell you that. But if you want an observation from an old hand at love, when I see you together I see love in action.”

Her words give me hope and a lot to think about. Once she has her armor in place, she says, “Let’s go downstairs. The fangirls will want to catch up with you.”

As we pass the bed, I notice something I missed because of my state of mind.

“Glamma, what is this?” I point at the white tulle peeking from under her blanket.

A guilty flush comes over her face. “Not something I’m willing to talk about at this time.”

I narrow my eyes at her and pull back the covering. “Is that…is that my mother’s wedding dress? When did you take it out of the attic?”

Glamma snatches the bedding from my hide to conceal the dress as if I can’t recognize the dress I’ve admired since I was a child. “I said, I’m not willing to talk about this right now.”

“Why are the fangirls here today?”

“You know, you should probably head home. You have things to discuss with Cameron and—”

I head toward the door. “You’re right. I’ll make sure to say my goodbyes to the ladies.”

Before I can cross the threshold, Glamma grabs the back of my dress. “There’s no rush. Why don’t we go through everything you need to get off your chest, first. It might take a few hours.”

“But that would be impolite. You raised me to have better manners than that.” I pull free, but before I can launch myself toward the stairs, Glamma tackles me to the ground.

“I insist that you stay up here with me a little longer. The fangirls need to concentrate on their work.”

Meanwhile the stereo blasts another song and the women enthusiastically sing along. With my glamma on my back, trying to stop me from discovering her most recent stunt, I drag myself across the floor, panting and sweating from the exertion.

When we approach the top of the stairs, I see Ms. Vivian at the bottom about to pass by. I raise my hand to get her attention. Glamma slams it to the ground.

“You want to play dirty, Glamma?”

“I’ve been around this block more decades than you have child.”

“Ms. Vivian, I need your help!” I yell.

Ms. Vivian stumbles to a halt and her eyes widen. “Is that little Ms. Kiwi? What are you doing on the floor?”

Onyx pops her head up to address my savior-in-waiting. “Vivian, don’t pay her no never mind and tell the ladies to wrap things up now! This is not a drill, it’s a code glitter!”

Vivian nods like a bobble head, and backs away from the stairs before turning and running toward the living room. Whether Glamma realizes it, her hold slackens. I roll onto my side, loosening her grip and leap down the stairs, stumbling over a few that I miss.
