Should I leave Xaden here and climb the mountain to get to the top for help?

I turned off the engine and knelt by Xaden, brushing his hair off his forehead. He felt warm to the touch and I worried he was starting to run a fever. My fear that the Roulex had done something to him to ensure he could never truly escape the prison echoed with every beat of my heart.

If I left him here, was I abandoning him to die?

I shook my head. I couldn’t wait. I had to do something to help him.

After I dribbled water into him, I left the shuttle and hiked the sloping side of the mountain.

I wiped the sweat off my brow and looked over my shoulder at the shuttle to assure myself that Xaden was still okay. The sun shone high overhead, but a cool breeze blew off the mountain.

Then shadows darted across the sky and blocked out the sun. Had the Roulex found us? I grasped one of the screwdrivers along my hem, I only had two left now, but I would use everything I could to keep them from recapturing me or Xaden.

But the shapes didn’t look like shuttles or spaceships. I blinked against the sun, trying to make out the figures.

Dozens of Angeliminir flew overhead.

“Hey, down here,” I yelled and waved my hands. Realizing I still held the tool, and they might think it a weapon, I dropped the screwdriver. It bounced across the rocky surface and tumbled down the mountainside. “Please, Xaden needs help.”

One of the females dove straight for me. I yipped, backing up as she landed right in front of me.

“What did you say?” she said with a snarl, a wicked-looking dagger in her hand and was aimed at my heart.

I licked my lips, my mouth suddenly dry. “X-Xaden. He’s in the shuttle down there, but I can’t get him to wake up. Please, you have to help him.”

“She’s lying.” Another Angeliminir, this one male with matching golden hair like this one landed beside her. “Xaden is dead.”

“No, no he’s not.” I shake my head so hard and fast I feel like I’ve got whiplash. “H-He was severely injured during the battle he and his parents fought in, but he survived. Go and see for yourself if you don’t believe me.”

“I’m not stupid.” The girl made a face and stepped closer, the knife tip pressing through my prison shirt.

“We will not fall for your trap so that you can give us to the Roulex,” the boy spat at my feet.

There had to be a way to convince them I was telling them the truth. “Wait. He told me about his siblings. Jax and Ximena. Twins.”

The girl blinked, backing away from me while the boy shook his head.

“That’s you two, isn’t it?” I could see the resemblance now with their lighter amethyst eyes and the square jawline of Jax that was similar to Xaden’s.

Ximena whistled and several Angeliminir landed around us. “I will go and see. If this is a trick, I will feed you to the birds.”

She shot up into the air and divebombed straight down to the shuttle. Before I could call out that she’d need my help getting into the ship, she ripped the door off.

I gasped.

“That’s Ximena’s second gift. Strength,” Jax said in a proud voice.

“Second gift? What’s the first… rapid healing?”

He glowered at me. “If you knew Xaden then you’d know about the extra gift.”

Ximena disappeared inside, then came out carrying Xaden in her arms. She flew over us and Jax along with the others shot up into the sky after her. They disappeared over the top of the highest mountain.

Great. Now I was alone to climb this freaking mountain. At least Xaden was back with his people and I prayed they could cure whatever was wrong.
