Chapter 7

“You look incredible,” Foster says. He is one to talk since the tuxedo he is wearing fits him like a glove. It is even more elegant than the one he wore for our wedding.

Unlike him, I spent the day getting my hair, makeup, and nails done. By the time I came home, I was ready for bed, but we have a full night ahead of us.

“So do you,” I return.

Foster’s gaze travels up from my five-inch peep-toe heels to the slit in the side of my dress before landing on my more than a hint of cleavage. He settles on my décolletage before his eyes meet mine. He licks his lips and straightens his already straight tie.

“Keep close to me tonight,” he starts, “I’m sure the wolves will be out.”

I raise my eyebrows. “Wolves? But we’re married.”

“That doesn’t mean shit to some men. There are plenty that would love to take what’s mine. I have many enemies.”

“I’m not really yours.”

“As long as you wear the Black name, you are. Keep that in mind.”

I sigh. “We should go.”

Along with the dress I’m in, Rachel gave me a black cape to go with it. It is made of the same sateen fabric and lined to keep the chill of October off my bare flesh. Foster pulls it from the hanger and helps me secure it around my neck. I then wait while he puts on his long black overcoat. When we arrive downstairs, Peters is waiting for us in front of the building. Foster holds my hand as I slip inside the limo with him following.

Once settled, he clears his throat, saying, “We don’t have to stay the entire time. I want to show my face, and we’ll be off.”

Shaking my head, I tell him, “I didn’t get dolled up so we could spend a few minutes there. I want to enjoy myself.”

“See how the other half lives?”

“You forget, I am the other half.”

“Touché, Mrs. Black.”

The event is being held at The Diamond Square ballroom. I’ve never been to the venue before, and I am so excited that I shift in my seat a few times.

“Ants in your pants?” Foster teases.

I turn to him. “Excuse me?”

“Are you uncomfortable? You keep moving around.”

“I’m excited. It’s not every day you go to The Diamond Square.”

“It’s like any other swanky hotel.”

“Which I’ve never been to.”

“You will. This is just one event I attend during the year. There’ll be others.”

My stomach churns as we pull into the line of limos waiting to discharge their passengers in front of the hotel. When it is our turn, door attendants dressed in gray uniforms open the door, and Foster steps out, holding his hand to help me.

I marvel at the ballroom as Foster offers me his arm while we enter. Several crystal chandeliers decorate the high ceilings. The room is decorated with black and white linens on the round tables, each one lined with chairs. A stage is set up at the front of the room with a podium. Several servers move about the room offering glasses of champagne and appetizers. Foster stops one to grab two flutes, then hands me one.

“It’s open bar. Take it easy tonight.”

I scowl. “I have no plans to get drunk.”

“I hope not.”
