I bite my lip. “I-I don’t know.”
Rachel chuckles as she pages through the racks of dresses before pulling a long black sateen halter gown with a slit up the right side. She holds it against me. “This would look darling on you. Try it on.”
“I’m not sure I should wear a gown that shows cleavage.”
Rachel puts her hand on my shoulder. “Honey, I’ve been to plenty of those events. You’ll probably be one of the modestly dressed people. Trust me. Go try it on.” She pushes me toward a mirrored area with several dressing rooms.
“What did you get?” Foster asks when he arrives home. It as well after seven but he told me he had a dinner meeting, so I ate without him.
“It’s a surprise.”
“A surprise? Will I actually be surprised?”
“Trust me. Rachel knew what I wanted.”
Foster loosens his silver tie, asking, “You didn’t know what you wanted?”
“Not a clue.”
“Then, I’m curious.”
I smirk. “Then, your curiosity will just have to hold until Saturday.”
Foster grumbles as he heads into the kitchen, where he takes out a crystal tumbler and fills it with sparkling water. He drank greedily, wiping the back of his mouth with his hand once he finishes.
“Are you feeling alright?”
“Fine.”
“How did your dinner meeting go?”
“As expected. Fucking sellers want to try to hamstring me for extra money. It won’t happen.”
“Are you walking away from the deal?”
“Hell no. I’m waiting. I did my due diligence. They’re desperate and have no other buyers. That building they want to sell is falling apart, but I want the land, not the building. I’ll tear it down when I get my hands on it, but they don’t need to know that.”
“You’re ruthless. Did I miss anything in the office today?”
“Nothing you should worry your pretty little head about.” Foster reaches out and strokes my cheek with his knuckles before he heads to his bedroom, leaving me in the wake of his cologne. Sometimes I can’t figure him out. He could be tender one second and then revert to his cantankerous self the next. Mercurial is what he should be called.
