Chapter 6

Foster stays in bed for the next two days, and I am right here with him. He grumbles when I nag him to take his medication, but it works, and by Thursday, he is feeling well enough to spend a few hours in the office. We are becoming friends, and it warms my heart that my fake husband is opening up to me. I am sitting at my desk when he knocks on my door. Foster looks tired.

“You’re leaving?” I ask.

“We’re leaving. I’d like to take my wife to lunch.”

I’m not sure if he called me his wife for the benefit of the employees, or me.

“I have a few things to go over before I leave.”

Foster raises his eyebrows. “Are you becoming me?”

I smirk. “Well, I am a Black.”

He starts to laugh until his coughing stops him.

I frown, asking, “Are you not feeling well?”

“I could use a rest.”

I shut the file I am looking over on my laptop. “I hope you didn’t push yourself by coming into the office.”

“Paige, I’m fine.”

“Uh-huh.”

He scowls, insisting, “I am. I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“I’m sorry,” I apologize as I rise from my chair.

“What do you have to be sorry about?”

“That you couldn’t sleep. I want you to be well.”

He sighs as I remove my coat from the small closet behind my desk. Foster helps me put it on, then runs his hands along my shoulders. Even though it isn’t skin to skin contact, the gesture sends goosebumps across my flesh. I’m not sure why.

“Shall we go?” he asks.

“Yes. I can make you some soup when we get home.”

“Peters is waiting downstairs.”

As we drive toward the penthouse, I realize how tired I am. Unlike Foster, I slept well the night before, but my father called earlier in the day. He wanted us to attend my mother’s sixtieth birthday party in two weeks. Based on our previous conversations, I am sure Foster will decline. I have a hard enough time convincing him to take off a couple of holidays with my family.

Only when Foster places one of his hands over mine am I aware that I am wringing my hands.

His eyebrows are knitted. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re nervous. Did something happen at the office?”

I keep my focus on his hand. “I don’t want to bother you.”

“Paige, don’t be ridiculous.”

“It’s a party.” I glance up at him, sure he will be frowning, but all he does is smile.
