Chapter 4

The bedroom Foster shows me to one day is five times the size of my bedroom at Zane’s apartment, and it comes with its own bathroom. I would have complete privacy to do what I want after we were away from the prying eyes of the public. I decide to have it painted a soft peach. Foster took me to choose furniture even though I told him what was already in the room was beautiful.

Thanks to his connections, and because Foster wanted me moved in before our engagement party, everything was ready three days ago. The room was painted, and new furniture had been delivered, so I took Friday off to instruct the movers who were packing up my things at Zane’s, and to shop for an outfit for our engagement party the next day. Taking a break, I join Lana in the living room while they work.

“I can’t believe you’re moving,” she says.

“Another couple of months and the boys will be here. I’ll be much more comfortable at Foster’s.”

“Suppose I need help?”

“I’ll be here,” I assure. “Just call me.”

“Will you continue working after you marry?”

“I haven’t decided. Foster says it’s my choice.”

Lana reaches out and cups my chin. “Are you sure you’re ready for someone like him?”

I look her in the eyes. “Why does everyone keep asking me that? Emma is married to Jordan, and I doubt anyone asked her if she was ready.”

“Their relationship took time to build. It seems like you’re rushing this.”

“It’s what Foster wants.”

She drops her hand from my face, asking, “But is it what you want?”

“I love him, just like you love Zane.”

“But our love was years in the making.”

“And you both made mistakes,” I counter.

“I made a mistake. I left him and married an asshole. Zane saved me.”

“Zane loved you from the first time he saw you.”

Lana smiles slightly. “It just seems strange that all of a sudden, you feel affection for a man you said was horrible.”

My stomach begins to roil. If my sister in law is questioning my relationship, will my soon to be father in law do the same?

“In business, Foster can be impossible, but in private, he’s wonderful.”

“I just want you to be happy.”

“I am happy. He makes me happy.”

“You know I’m always here to talk.”

“I appreciate it, but things are fine.”

A sickening feeling pushes up my throat. I am living a lie, and if it ever came to light, I would have to deal with the fallout. I hug Lana as the movers carry out the rest of my things.

“I’ll see you soon. Besides, it’s better I’m not here. You can get the nursery ready.”

Lana clings to me, and I bury my face in her blonde mane. I’ll miss her and my brother, but it’s for the best.

“Don’t ever think you aren’t wanted,” she murmurs. “We love you.” When Lana lets me go, I plant a kiss on her cheek before I follow the last of the movers out the door.
