“How did you end up sleeping with her?”
“I woke up to her, stroking me. I wanted it; I wanted her so much. I told her she needed to be sure. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t help myself.”
“Geez Zane, you should have used better judgment.”
“I know. It was stupid. After it was over, I wanted to go, and she got angry. She was hostile, and I was hurt. So I left. I haven’t talked to her since. Now she’s married, and it’s done.”
“So, are you still going through with your plan of waiting out their marriage?”
“No. I have Jenna. She’s very nice. You’ll meet her soon.”
“What did you do this weekend?”
I hesitate, not sure if I should tell him my time spent in seclusion, “I stayed home and worked on some stuff.”
“Stuff? Like a bottle of whiskey? You reek. Did you gargle with the stuff this morning?”
“I might have indulged a little too much.”
“Forget Jenna.”
“What? No, I like her.”
“You’re not ready to date. You’ll hurt her.”
“We’re fine.”
“You think you are, but you’re not. You’re still hung up on Lana. Have you slept with Jenna yet?”
“No, we’re taking it slow.”
“We’re, or you’re?”
“It means nothing.”
“Is that what you tell yourself to feel better?”
“I don’t need to feel better. I’m fine.”
“And I’m worried about you. Why don’t you come to Cape Cod with us this upcoming weekend? Olivia is inviting a few people now that the expansion of the house is finished. We have six bedrooms, plus the master.”
“I’m not sure if Jenna is free.”
“I want you to take some time off from her. Come, enjoy, be with people, you know.”
“Who’s going?”
“JC and Lexi, Chase and Megan, Emma and Jordan, Hunter and Rory and of course the kids will be there. There is one extra bedroom, and it’s yours.”
“Can I let you know at the end of the week?”
“If you must.”
Lucian gives me a tight smile as he walks out. I should go. The house is in a quiet location, and I can relax. I can’t keep staying home and hiding. The beach will be a nice change.
“Zane, want to go in the canoe with us?” Rory, Lucian’s niece, asks.
“No, thank you. I prefer to sit on the beach. Have fun.”
