“As long as he treats you right.”

“He does. So what were you thinking?”

“Maybe a weekend trip somewhere. Someplace quaint like Amish Country.”

“That could work.”

“I haven’t decided, but I hope she says yes.”

“She loves you, and I know she wants to get married. She thought you were going to ask her last month on her birthday.”

“Wouldn’t that have been a cliché?”

“Maybe. You should ask her on your birthday.”

“No. I would have to wait until December, and I’m bursting now.”

“Lana, can you come out here, please?”

“I’m doing something. What do you need?” She calls from the bedroom.

“Can you join me?”

“Zane, I have so much stuff to put away.”

We moved the last of her things to my apartment an hour ago. Suitcases and boxes litter my apartment, but in time it will get put away. I ordered Chinese food for dinner, and it just arrived. I asked the hostess if they could put an empty container in the bag so I could put the ring inside. I know it’s a little unoriginal, but I can’t wait. I want her to have my ring on her finger.

“Dinner is here. You can take a half-hour and eat with me. You have plenty of time to unpack everything later.”

She comes out in a huff and washes her hands then sits down at the table. I watch as she scoops food into her dish, pork fried rice, pork dim sum, and sesame chicken. All the containers are open except the one that holds the ring, which I put closest to her dish. She doesn’t notice it until she’s half-finished with dinner.

“What’s in this one,” she says as she pokes it with her chopstick.

“I don’t know. Open it.”

She picks it up to untuck the cover, “It’s light. What’s in here? Fortune cookies?”

“Look and see.”

She pulls at the cover and looks. I opened the black velvet box before I slipped it inside. Lana gasps and puts her hand over her mouth then stares at me.

“I love you, Lana Collins. Will you marry me?”

“I…What…Yes.”

I take the container from her and remove the ring, “Hold out your hand.”

I slip the ring on her finger, and she can’t stop staring at it.

“I can’t believe I’m engaged.”

The smile on my face is so broad that my cheeks hurt. To see how happy she is warms my heart.

“We’re engaged.”

Lana gets up and sits in my lap, planting kisses all over my face and telling me she loves me. She jumps up to start calling her family and friends, leaving me to clean up dinner. I can hear her laughing and giggling as she tells everyone she’s engaged.

Later in the evening, after Lana has exhausted herself out with all the phone calls and unpacking and is sleeping on our bed fully dressed, I call my parents.
