“I need to feel you in my arms even if we don’t make love. I could set the alarm so you can leave early before everyone else wakes up.”

“I don’t need to. Do you know that there is a passage between our closets?”

“What?”

“A passage. How do you think I got in here? I’m not even sure if my parents know about it. I found it by accident when I was a teenager.”

“So, you can stay here all night and not have to worry about sneaking into the hall when you leave?”

“Nope.”

Lana smiles at me, and at that moment, I want to make love to her, but I resist. I want her to be the one to engage me, not the other way around. I feel sorry for the terrible way I treated her this afternoon.

“Zane, can you just hold me tonight?”

“You know that’s what I want. I want you in my bed.”

She gets off my lap and moves to my side. She snuggles against me, and I pull her against my body. I know now that I’m in love with her. She trusted me enough to tell me about a horrible time in her life. I want to take care of her. She deserves someone who will do that for her. Lana falls asleep in my arms, and I follow soon after having one of the best nights of sleep in a long time.

The next morning I hear talking in the hall, and it sounds like they said Lana’s name. I gently shake her awake.

“Good morning, sweetheart. I think someone is looking for you. You better go back to your bedroom before they find you here.”

She jumps up and climbs over my body, scrambling to the closet. I hear a soft creaking and the closing of a door. A few seconds later, she’s out in the hallway talking. I hope they don’t suspect that she was sleeping in my bed. I enjoyed our time together, but I wish she stayed a little longer so we could take care of the erection that seems always to start my morning off.

I drag myself out of bed even though it’s barely seven and a Sunday. I might as well get my day started, and since the weather looks great, perhaps we could spend the day on the beach. I jump into the shower and wash quickly, then slip on a pair of red swim trunks and a white polo shirt that Lana got me.

When I come down to breakfast, only Lana and her mother are sitting at the table. Steam trays hold food, pancakes, sausage, bacon, French toast, hash browns, and scrambled eggs. I load up my plate and sit next to Lana, who’s only drinking coffee and eating a slice of toast. Her mother greets me, hello.

“Did you sleep well, Zane?”

“Fantastic. The bed was so comfortable.”

“You weren’t warm? It seems the air conditioner was set at seventy-four instead of seventy.”

“Not at all. I had plenty to keep me warm,” I glance at Lana, who smirks and buries her face in her coffee cup before her mother sees her smile.

“What are you two planning on doing today?”

“I’d like to go to the beach if that’s okay with Lana.”

“I was hoping you would say that. We usually have lunch on the beach on Sundays if it’s calm. I think today will be perfect.”

Lana groans, “Mom, really? Why can’t we just come in here and eat?”

“Because your father enjoys having everyone together for one week a year. Please indulge him and stop complaining.”

I shovel food in my mouth to avoid commenting. I don’t want to get in the middle of their little discussion. Libby gets up to refill her coffee just as James comes down the stairs, and Lana pulls at my sleeve and gestures towards the beach.

“Mom, Dad, we’ll see you on the beach later.”

I put the last bit of bacon in my mouth before I excuse myself, and Lana takes my hand as we head down to the beach.

“You were in a hurry to get away from them.”

“I want to be alone with you.”

“We could have done that in my room this morning.”
