“Hello, Mom.”

“Your father and I were watching the news tonight. Are you and Lana back together?”

She sounded almost thrilled that it might be true.

“Yes, we’re back together. I was planning on telling you.”

“But I thought she was married to someone else? We saw pictures of her wedding in the tabloids while we were waiting in line at the grocery store.”

“Mom, it’s a very long story. I promise that I’ll tell it to you, but I’d like to do it in person.”

“Zane, are you sure you know what you’re doing? She broke your heart once before.”

“She did, but that’s over. We’re seeing a couple’s therapist. A lot of what broke us up were misunderstandings and lack of communication. I love her. She is the only one that I want to be with.”

“All we ever wanted is for you to be happy. If she makes you happy, then that’s all that counts. Come see us soon. We miss you.”

“I miss you too. We just have a few things to work through, and we’ll plan a trip to Albany.”

I told her that I loved her, and we hung up. I wasn’t expecting her to be so cool about us being back together. She was distraught when Lana walked out on me. I went to the living room after the call to sit with Lana.

“Was that your mom?”

“Yeah. She knows we’re back together.”

“I don’t expect her to be happy for us. Paige told me she was furious when I left you.”

“She’s happy for us. She told me we should visit soon.”

“She wants to see me?”

“Lana, my parents aren’t the type to hold a grudge. They want us to be happy, and they know that you do it for me.”

I pulled her onto my lap and then stretched out so she could arrange herself on top of me lengthwise.

“Zane, are we going to be alright?”

“Why do you ask,” I said as I tucked a lock of her auburn hair behind her ear.

“Because nothing seems to have gone right since we got together.”

“Now or before?”

“Both. I just worry that we’re deluding ourselves that we’ll be happy.”

“Do you want to be with me?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to be my wife?”

“Yes.”

“Are you happy right now?”

“Yes.”

“Then I don’t see a problem. We’re working through everything. Eventually, we’ll look back at this time as just another hurdle we had to climb over.”
