I start coughing, and Lana comes to the door and mouths that I’ve worked enough for the day.

“I have to go before Lana yells at me.”

“Tell her I said hello.”

“I will. I can’t thank you enough, Luc.”

“Hey, I’m an owner too. I have a stake in our success.”

I disconnect the call, and Lana comes to sit by my bedside, “Is everything alright?”

“No. Declan is trying to work on our customers. One of the school systems in Atlanta might return our software. That’s a two million dollar refund if it happens. They never contacted us about any problems yet now they seem to have a bunch of them.”

“I’m sorry. He’s a very angry person.”

“He won’t get away with what he’s doing.”

The lobby phone rings, and Lana goes to answer it. I hear her tell the front desk to accept something being delivered. She calls out and tells me that she’s heading downstairs to get whatever was dropped off. I feel tired and snuggle under the sheet.

When she comes back, I hear her ripping into something and cursing. I sit up in bed and call her. She comes in holding a legal-sized envelope.

“Divorce papers. That bastard wasted no time.”

“Do you care? You want to be free of him.”

“I get nothing. I have nothing, Zane. I can’t contribute.”

“I told you that it doesn’t matter to me. I want to take care of you. You decide whether you want to work or not.”

“I do. I never told you what I did when I went away. I think you should know.”

“It’s the past. Does it matter?”

“I don’t want any secrets. I want to tell you.”

“When?”

“Now, if you’re up to it.”

“Can I see the divorce papers?”

She hands them to me, and I slide the thick packet out of the envelope. Basically, it’s everything that she said; she gets nothing. I know she just wants to be done with Declan, but I still want an attorney to look them over.

“See, I get nothing.”

“I want an attorney to check this out.”

“Do you know a divorce attorney?”

“No, but I’ll ask my in house counsel, Emily Fong, if she knows of one.”

“I don’t want you to spend any money on this.”

“And I want to make sure he doesn’t have some sneaky shit in the paperwork. An attorney needs to check it.”

She nods, “I want to tell you about the night I left.”

I start to chew my cheek because I’m afraid it will bring up feelings I buried long ago, but I decide to let her continue.
